Remembrance Day, with its annual ceremonies has come and passed for another year. I had the pleasure of addressing the young people at the Rossland High School again this year. It is an event I am beginning tQ look forward to, the youngsters are always so atfentive which is the thing that makes it so worthwhile. To every boy and girl who heard me I want to say once again. '!banks, for the opportunity. An excellent turnout once again for the service and laying of wreaths and, as always, the gathering afterward was also well attended with people coming along to visit from various branches around the area. On Tuesday morning our curling season for the Retirees Curling Club opened with four games. Our rink with Joe Rosse sr. playing third, Bill Dobbs second, Al Besso lead and Ray Scott as our fifth man won our first game 14-9 over Arnold Vanness' rink, so we are off and running again for the 1985-86 season. We have ten five-man rinks and the skip sits out the first two ends, followed by the third, second and so on down to number five who sits out the last two. One game is played in the afternoon at the same time as the Ladies' afternoon club which is going with only four rinks this year. Our newly-renovated premises at the curling rink• is now on the verge of completion with just paointing and a few finishing touches to wind it up. The people working on the job are to be commended for an excellent job of work on this project. I guess everyone in the sporting world has been shocked by the fate of Philadelphia's fine young goalie, Pelle Lindbergh. It just goes to prove that fast cars and a little more to drink than one can handle are a disastrous combination. We who saw him last spring in action against the Edmonton Oilers marvelled at his dexterity and quickness and that's the way I will remember him. While on the subject of hockey, the Warriors have now gone six games since their last victory and now they need a couple of good wins to turn it around for them. Twenty goals against over the weekend has to be a pretty rough outing. Let's hope they can tum it around this weekend with two home games and one away in Trail and reinforce their spot in the standings and maybe improve it. Football will hold the spotlight over this weekend and next, with B.C. and Hamilton as my favorites to meet in the Big 0. B.C. may be missing one of their most productive players as Merv Fernandez is said to be a doubtful starter for this Sunday's game. I talked to Harvey McKay yesterday afternoon. He had just come in from on outing of cross-country skiing. Said Harvey in answer to my question. How did it go? "We need more of the white stuff." Short and to the point, but I guess it eaxpresses the opinion of most of the skiing fraternity. That snow holds a lot of people in its grip and most of them are skiers. Or motorists with smooth tires. I talked to all our kids over the weekend, Rick in Brooks, Alta., Carol in Calgary and David in White Rock, all are in fine shape and looking forward to a get-together in Calgary around Christmas. It's going to be a treat for mum and I to see them all again along with the youngsters. Rick tells me young Doug is playing hockey now, started out as a goaltender but may change his mind if his mom has anything to say about it, Peg says, "Anything but thal" And so once again I'll say. Tll' next time, then}
