Behind the Socred claim of environmental sensitivity is an attitude grown so swollen, so arrogant, that 30 days before they wil forced to call an ection they ve rammed through logging and logging roads in key environmentally sensitive areas, for the awarded makes the road even more unacce; le. The domination of B.C. government by exploitative corporate interests can be seen more clearly in the Lasca Creek issue outside Nelson. Consider tthe fact that the p have responded with blockades and gone to jail to protest it. Respected figures wig work i in known have recognized the true nature of the issue. Colleen McCrory, the award~ tourism, Howard Dirks, Iecccned the roadbuilding into a scenically important area on the Kootenay Lake West Arm. The Regional District of Central Kootenay protested, asking for a moratorium, the mayor of Nelson joined in the objections, as did the chamber of commerce. Citizens marched in protests, plans for + blockades were ‘discussed. residents involved or the concerns of -the public in general. Consider, for instance, the decision to drive a logging road into Hasty Creek in the Kootenays, which drew a blockade of 280 people in this rural area, and the arrest of 84 of them Sept. 6. The blockade grew out of the fact that the public process with the Ministry of Forests and the logging company did not provide meaningful safeguards to preserve water purity or permit any liability of the parties concerned with building the road. These were Confr arose between loggers and environmentally concerned residents, but still, with Dirks in the forefront, the plans to cut through the environmentally sensitive area have gone on. The arrests at the Walbran, at Hasty Creek, the image of teenagers and senior citizens being finger- printed, photographed, jailed, brought to court, is the reality behind the Socred green concerns. The present government has repeatedly used the tourts, cynically employing legal process, to enlarge residents and concerned citi of every age, from tee: to seniors, drawn from all walks of life. The fact that no contract for the logging of this area has even been The government hasn't the slightest care that its policies are so outrageously invasionary, injurious and unfair that ordinary people and one of the best known people in the field, and David Suzuki, the famous geneticist, were two of those arrested at Hasty Creek. What has the B.C. government to say to all this? Nothing. It keeps its bureaucratic eyes averted and its people ever arrested in a forest dispute in B.C. As participants, we deplore this result and ask ourselves, as law abiding citizens, why we were pushed into this position. We have the knowledge and responsibility to do things differently in our relationship with each other and in our use of the forest. In our view those who are responsible for managing B.C.’s forests, professional foresters and bureaucrats alike, fail to protect ities and the forest ears sealed to the reper of the policies it initiates or supports. The protests, the arrests, expose _ first and foremost, while blaming the confrontation on troublemakers. Watch the television, stop and think about those first 84 people in court Tuesday when the real crime is contempt of the citizenry whose rights are being trampled by the Social Credit party. I can’t wait to vote in the coming election to help redress these wrongs.
