The New Zealand- owned company blamed the loss on some of the poorest market conditions ever encountered and predicted a “difficult, : although improving” year ahead. If he didn’t, a lot of customers might walk out of his store empty-handed. “Without all those questions, we can’t tell then, the products to use,” he said. “We want people to feel when they come in here they’re going to be able to get their questions answered.” ‘We’ are Tom, his brother David and sister Carol, the trio of Oglows behind Oglow’s Paint & Wallcoverings Ltd. The three work in a business started up as a building supply and contracting company by the family 40 years ago. Since 1977, Tom and David and, more recently, Carol have been supplying the people of Castlegar and Grand Forks with a flair for design, plus the | ones who just want to change up one year won’t need constant annual attention and that blinds are now being seen as an alternative to drapes and shears. Tom said comparing today’s wallpaper to that of a decade ago is like night and day. “The quality has improved so much in the last 10 years,” he said. Since their first day of. business, Tom says that roughly 90 per ¢ent of the customers who come in for wallpaper want to do it themselves, but can’t put a finger on why. “Whether it’s economics or what, I don’t know,” he said, adding that it could the simplicity. “They start and realize just how easy it is.” Like a lot of smaller centres, Castlegar is usually a little behind the big cities when it comes to keeping on top of current design trends. Tom says the people of the area tend to be.a little more conservative than their counterparts in Vancouver, who have eyes for the dramatic and ultra-contemporary looks. Because of that, he said some big decisions have to be made when it comes time to stock the shelves. ; “We know it’s not going to sell right away, so we have to be careful what we buy,” he said. With more and more people looking to stretch a dollar these days, cross-border shopping is affecting local business, and Oglow’s is not immune. Tom admits that, even after figuring in exchange and duty, the American price is better, but the quality isn’t. “You can’t compare a cheap product to a good product and justify that’s the reason why you’re going down there,” he said. “I just don’t buy that.” The paint industry is one that has been fairly consistent over the years, with what seems Designing Oglows to bé very little change. Tom says one noticeable change is the gradual shift from oil-based paints to ones with a latex-base. : He added both have advantages, yet it’s really all up to the customer. “It basically comes down to what the customer wants to use in the long term,” he said. And what the customer wants can sometimes be a little confusing, especially when the customer doesn’t know what the customer wants. Enter one of the Oglows. Tom realizes that changing a house, whether inside or outside, is a big step. “A lot of people are afraid to try something because they can’t visualize what it will look like,” he said. . And visualizing is all ina day’s work for the Oglow three. “Our customers are our business, so we treat them right.” @ Saturday, Apri! 25, 1992 BIRTHS HALL sale Sherry and Tom Hall of Castlegar a girl, born April 1. Through school, Tom realized a knack for drawing, primarily drafting, which he says is an asset when it comes to visualizing the look a customer wants. “I_guess I have a logical, artsy side,” he said. “Whether it’s because I grew up in the business, I don’t know.” Putting his “artsy side” and a desire to get into retail together, Tom and his brother took over the family business 15 years ago, though they weren’t coming in cold turkey. “We grew up in the business, so we basically we knew it,” he said. - ; Since then, the world of design for both the interior and exterior of homes has changed, some would even day drastically. ~ Gone are the toud, sharp colors of the 70s, the poor quality wallpaper and the idea that blinds only belong in the office.
