(JEFFGABERT > Sun Sports Getting even and meting out a + quick revenge is a basic ) although often vile part of | human existence. For the Castle- gar Rebels last weekend, it was just plain necessary. The Rebels entered the weekend satisfied in their hockey abilities after a thrashing of the Spokane Braves whom they beat in four straight games. Their opponent would be Grand Forks who need six games and plenty of emotion to outlast the Rossland Warriors. The two teams two different paths collided last Friday in Game One of the KUHL South Division Final and it was clear from the outset that the Rebels were in for.a battle, The first goal was scored just under five minutes into the period when Rebel goaltender Mike Kooznetsoff found himself facing three Bruins players with only one white shirt in front of him. He managed to get a piece of Clif Garcia’s shot but not enough as it trickled behind him. The Rebels responded at the 9:47 mark as Grady Moore's weak low shot from the blueline eluded the pads of Bruins goalie Brad Britton. But the Bruins quickly came back and took a one-goal lead into the second. The'Bruins scored their two goals on just five shots while the Rebels got only one despite pum- melling Britton with 17 shots. The next period saw the contin- uation of the Bruin power-play goal trend as they took a 3-1 lead just 1:45 into the third on their sec- ond power- play goal of the night. Even steven _ Rebels - Grand Forks series tied at one apiece after weekend play Kevin MacGillvary is a bumper and a grinder who doesn't often get a chance to score. He had a breakaway here but the shot just went wide. Rebels star defenceman Mike Hunter then took a major penalty and game misconduct but the Bruins. couldn’t score which meant overtime The first overtime period decided nothing despite constant pressure by the Rebels that included golden opportunities for Craig Moisey and Todd Doyle, who hit the cross-bar. It wasri't until the 1:13 mark of the second overtime that Bruin forward J.P Brabant fired a hard. shot at Vince ded for the Rebels after being given a penalty shot.-Antignani went top shelf on Britton and he did it so quick he could have stolen the peanut butter while he was there. Nino Dacosta tied the score for the Rebels and Jesse Oldham put them up 4-3 going into the third period but they couldn’t hold the lead as Grand Forks scored yet another power-play goal at 7:07 K that ly found it’s way onto the stick of” Yanik Gagne who deposited it in the net. Game over, and best forgotten. “The main reason for us losing game one was discipline,” said Rebel coach Garry Sauer. “We gave up three power-play goals and we can’t do that. Grand Forks is a good team and they capital- ized on them.” Despite giving up five goals on 21 shots Sauer said he has no real goaltending concerns. “We gave up five goals but the thing is, good teams wilt capital- ize on the power-play and they had three,” said Sauer. “That was the big thing in the game. I didn’t have a goaltending con- cern at all, If anything I think our goaltending is better than theirs and that will hopefully be a factor later in the series.” Game Two Saturday night saw the Rebels go with the exact same game plan as Friday but with a lot better discipline. Even still, the Bruins managed to weather an early Rebel storm and draw first blood as Gagne solved the puzzle of Rebel goalie J.C. Moore. And then Dacosta broke his stick SUN SPORTS PHOTO / Jeff Gabert against the glass. It was a sign of frustration, perfect disregard for a defence- less hockey stick and even Dacosta himself would tell you it was stupid. But it worked. The Rebels went on to domi- nate the second period and score four straight goals by Moisey, Darren Pottle, Moisey again and finally Mike Hunter. The offen sive outburst left the Bruins in disarray and the Rebels went on to a 5-3 win in front of 580 fans. It was a big game and, besides getting even, Castlegar sent a message to the Bruins that noth- ing comes easy in the Crypt. “It was a must win for us,” said Sauer. “We would've loved to have won two and I know Grand Forks was happy to go home with a split. But we did show a lot of character.” See EVEN 2B S d | Se Around the World in an Afternoon The Castlegar Figure Skating Club has figured prominently in a number of competitive events this year and now they hope to display some of those figures to the general public in the annual Castlegar Figure Skating Carnival coming this Saturday Mar. 11 to the Com- plex. The club will be performing two complete shows at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. featuring the theme of “Dancing Around the World”. Hitting centre at Castle Bowl JEFF GABERT ‘Sun Sports There were.a lot of teams hitting the hardwood in Castlegar last weekend but the only ones who feally were looking for strikes were at the Castle Bowling Lanes in Castlegar. The Junior Division Youth Bowling Council West Kootenay Playdowns took place at Castle Bowl last Sunday afternoon with teams from all over the West Kootenay participating. » The junior boys category encompasses ages 11-13 dnd the Castlegar team was represented by Kyle Duff, Ashley Aubin, Billy Trubetskoff, Aaron Archibald and Darcy Carreiro. Castle- gar's single bowler was Robin Duke. Ail the juniors were battling for the opportunity to represent the West Ki Zone in the Provincials being held April 1 in Surrey. Unfortunately they came up just a little short as they both gained silver medals. Duke ended up missing the trip to Surrey by a sparse 31 pins. Roland Handley, the YBC Coordinator for Castlegar, was happy with the teams performance despite the second place finish. “It was excellent,” said Handley. “As far as placing, this is probably the best we've ever done. This is our seventh year in the YBC program and a lot of our kids have worked their way up. It's all a process of development.” Handley had special praise for Duke who narrowly missed the trip to Provincials. “He's got a very nice style,” said Handley. “He's been bowling for a lot of years and he's practised quite a bit. He'll be back.” The junior girls team of Kailee Tassone, Anna McCullagh, Erin Engel, Christina McIntosh and Jenny Poznikoff picked up bronze medals The Castlegar YBC Senior and Bantam contingent were also in action last weekend as they travelled to the zone finals in Beaver Valley and Nelson respectively Derek-Handley continued his solid play in the Senior division with a.gold medal which assures him of a trip to the Provincials. Most believe he has a strong shot at the National Championship as well which will be held in St. John’s, Newfoundland The Senior Girls team of Misty Him, Valeric Kosowan, Daphne Jackson, Sasha Sapriken and Kim Makaroff brought home a bronze medal from Beaver Valley. The Bantam bowlers took the short trip to the Savoy Lanes in Nel- son for their zone finals. The highest Castlegar placing came from the silver medal winning girls team of Stephanie McIntosh, Janice Strike!
