With the Macdonald government settled for another lease of power, he again resigned his portfolio and returned to London. The operation was re- peated in part in the general elec- tion of 1891, Sir Charles returning to Canada in February and after taking an active part in the returo of the conservative government, under Sir John -Macdonald, for the last time, resumed the duties of the high commissionership. Finally Made Promier. After the death of Sir John Mac- donald, which was soon followed by those of his successors, Sir John Abbott and Sir John Thompson, Sir Charles returned from London to become secretary of state in Sir Mackenzie Powell’s ini: ion. After holding this office from January 15 to April 27, 1886, Sir Charles Tupper himself became premier and held the office until the general election on June 23, which resulted in the formation of Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s ministry. Since then, Sir Charles has led the con- servative minority in the house of commons. All friends and supporters of A. S. Goodeve as candidate for mayor in the year 1900 are requested to meet at 8 o'clock on Saturday Evening to elect committees and to arrange for the campaign. s VoL. 5. NO. 98.
