Glen Freeman NEWS REPORTER It’s not easy being the president. But for 24-year-old Jeff Leggat, President of © the Selkirk College Students Association since March of 1990, it sure is fun. “It’s been a great-two years,” Leggat said, “I’ve got some great memories and met some super people.” He certainly has met a lot more people than he would ever have met in his home and native town of Birtle, Manitoba, population 800. “That’s one of the reasons I’m here in Castlegar today,” Leggat said. “I went to the University of Winnipeg for a while, but there were 275 people in my biology class.” Being a number after living in a small town - for so long was a bit too much for him too handle, so Leggat decided to give Selkirk College a try. “A friend of mine told me about this great city in British Columbia called Castlegar, with a population of about 75,000. “When I enrolled at Selkirk I expected to live right across the street from a 7-11. I guess my friend added an extra zero to the number of people who live here.” However, Leggat wouldn’t trade his time in Castlegar for all of the 7-Elevens in Vancouver. “I love Castlegar and the college. It’s great to know that if I have a problem I can talk to any of my professors right after the class,” he said. “And the faculty; administration and students are so close here that things never get too political.” “That makes my job as president a lot easier.” ‘When I enrolled at Selkirk I expected to live right across the street from a 7-Eleven.’ — Jeff Leggat For the last two years, his job has been representing the approximately 1,400 students of Selkirk, a job which he appears to have been successful at. “Student presidents come and go, and you never hear about them,” said Selkirk Computer Manager Dick Wolff, “but Jeff everybody knows.” If you spend any time on the Selkirk campus, you can’t help but know Leggat. According to some of his friends, school is his life. “TI love to learn,” Leggat said, “and my two years as president of the student body sure has taught me some lessons.” In fact, Leggat feels that the leadership skills he has learned will be invaluable in his future. “My position here has given me a background in organizing, planning, public relations, and so Presid News photo by Glen Freeman Jeff Leggat may strike a serious pose for the camera, but this two-year President of the Selkirk College Student's Association has had his share of collegiate fun. on.” What does ‘and so on’ mean? “And it'll look great on a résumé,” said Leggat. Another thing that will look great on his résumé is the Aleohol Awareness program which is now in place on the Selkirk campus. “That is the one program which I have been most involved in over the last two years.” Leggat recently spearheaded the ‘Alcohol Awareness Week’ which was designed to show Castlegar’s youth that they don’t need to drink to have a good time. : Events of the week included Jell-O wrestling, an alcohol tolerance test, a mock accident and a pub crawl. “We didn’t preach that everybody should stop drinking, just that they should start drinking more responsibly,” said Leggat. And Leggat insists that message is getting through. “Drinking and driving isn’t acceptable anymore. Designated drivers are becoming a common sight these days, even in bars.” Leggat won’t be a common sight around the Peg campus after the school year draws to a ose. After getting his business diploma this spring, het will be moving to Toronto to work with Bacchus. “Bacchus is the Greek God of partying or wine or something like that,” said Leggat. Bacchus is also an alcohol awareness and abuse prevention program - promoting responsible decisions about the use or non-use of alcohol among post secondary students. Leggat will be creating designated driver’ programs for post-secondary campuses all across Canada, proving that there is life after college politics. But there is still plenty of life in college politics. “Students are really becoming involved in their school,” Leggat said. “They are coming out to more activities, paying attention to events, and generally peeene more aware of what’s going on around em.” That’s good news for the college, because Student Association elections are just around the corner. “Nominations are open now, and election day will be April 2. We already have a few nominees, so it should be a good race this year.” Leggat’s advice for the incoming president? “Get out into the community, meet lots of people, and have a good time.” - After all, being the president may not be easy, but it sure would be fun.
