As one Second World War, vet said after sampling * three of the bars: “The army must want a silver knife and fork these days. When they open one of these they probably expect to find an American Express card in- side. What's the army coming to? Maybe they had better go back to chewing their mocea- sins at night.” The research station tri- ed them on a cross section of the public — “even including a bank manager," MacGregor said. Joe Comeau said: “There is no way we could give the troops those bars, They wouldn't accept them. They. are too tough on their teeth. Some of them you couldn't even cut with a knife.” He said the army set up a taste panel that found the troops didn't like the taste of the cheese or the chicken bar. But MacGregor said the bars will soon be made by a Vancouver firm and will be on sale to the public after Christmas. “Aside from the army we took on the project because’ survival kits now sold in Canada are all import- ed. We tried to come up with something different and be- lieve we did. “As well as a survival bar (the apple bar contains two apples, pear juice, a little honey and has 200 calories) they can also be eaten instead of candy which, of course, is much better for you." Now really on the run, Laurie made his way to ool, where he left several of Rose's‘ shirts-in a- with two strangers on top. I. y Laurie’s literary talents received wide acclaim throughout Britain. This was better than Robin Hood. No doubt encouraged by the excitement caused by his firs letter, Laurie again took pen in hand and dashed off greetings to the Glasgow Herald. The letter was pub- lished on Aug. 29. In it Laurie took several pages in an endeavour to convince the public that he was a cross between an angel and a martyr. Police traced Annandale’s activities before his meeting m a Mrs, Currie of Port Bannantyne using:a fictitious name before travelling to Arran. He left wearing a straw hat. When he returned he sported a white yachting cap and brown tennis jacket. During the balance of his stay with irs. The yachting cap and tennis jacket were turned over to the police. They had belonged to Edwin Rose. ‘wo weeks after the murder, reporters from the North British Daily Mail manageu to get a handle on John Annandale. His’ real name was John Watson Laurie of Glasgow. The 25-year-old man was from a well-to-do, respectable family, but had been in and out of minor scrapes all his life. The industrious reporters located a James Aitken, who knew the wanted man as Laurie, and who had been on the Ivanhoe with Laurie and Rose.
