Wolfe, who says he has 41 children ranging in age from 56 to two years, is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most married man in the world. “Everybody's looking for love,” Wolfe said. “I've been doing ‘this over half a cen- tury, and I'm still as game as ever, if not gamer.” Although he still loves marriage, Wolfe wants to make a few changes when he takes his next wife. When he goes on the Merv Griffin show on April 29; he'll let everyone know he wants his next bride to be a little older. “I never married anyone over 20 years old,” he said. “But now if] get one 20 to 25, that-would be OK. You got to have them young because they’ve got nerve and con- fidence and they want a chal- lenge.” CITES DRAWBACKS Marrying teenagers had its drawbacks, he said. “When you. marry the young ones and dress ‘em up and they get big cars and mink coats, then somebody else wants to get ‘em,” he said. “They think maybe they can do better and they leave. But they always wind up coming back.” . Wolfe's longest marriage lasted five years; his shortest ended after 38 days. But he believes his next mate will be the last one. “You always think all of them will be your last,” he said. “When you get married, you're married for eternal 1&S Appraisals Ltd: Joseph R. When Wally was five his family moved. west to Saskatoon, where he grew up and attended school. He sang constantly — at school sionally. He picked up an old Martin guitar for $100 and and dances. Wally went next to Montreal where he performed on . the Mus-Kee-Kee Show in a group called the “Pony Express.” “A lot of old people will remember that one,” he says. While we talked, Wally leafed through a ."The ‘Major: Bowes. During those Mus-Kee-Kee days, Walley remembers getting up at 7 a.m: to be on the air by to get in clear voice at’ that time of the ‘morning. They . were live. "They travelled and played. throughout Ontario for an entirely different occupation. - “was an adventuresome guy... wanted to see what. springtime came, however, “you couldn't keep me down old time fiddler Don Messer, and with his guitar, his soft way of singing western ballads, Wally joined ‘Don Messer's New Brunswick Lumberjacks. There were about 17 in that original group, and they sang mainly sentimental cowboy songs and ballads. x The year with Don Messer is well-remembered by Wally. Besides the weekly radio programs, they did _ “dance jobs in between,” driving to their performances in an old Model A Ford. One evening the group arrived at a rooming house, unpacked, and got ready to play at a local dance.: When they arrived at the hall, however, only a handful of coupled showed up.’“So we gave the people their money back, but then we didn't have enough to pay for the rooming house.” The next day they travelled to Cape Breton where they played to an audience of 1,500. _ “So we were able to send our money back to pay for the * room.” They also performed ‘on “The Major Bowes Amateur Hour.” “He was a fakeroo,” claims Wally. “It was not an amateur hour. He.used professionals, and if he could get acts for nothing, he took them. The last thing he told us . before we played was, ‘Don't make it sound too good, ya." ae It was about this time that Wally got the nickname “the . yodelling cowboy.” He. yodelled:for' me then, a soft melodic sort of yodel. “I was always gbla-to yodel in a low voice without yelling.” After a year The Yodelling Cowboy left the. Don Messer show and got'a job singing on cruise ships called the “Lady Boats.” They sailed from Halifax to Boston and then on down to Bermuda and the West Indies and every night a small four-piece orchestra would play while Wally DON MESSER .’:). But his * reputation as the “yodelling cowboy" preceded him and when the requests were made, they were for. cowboy songs. He enjoyed his work'on the boats and “met so many interesting people.” When he left the “Lady Boats," he met Virginia one evening when he was singing. And Wally kept on singing. Virginia admitted to me. that during their courting days she was-always a little jealous of his _ guitar. “That guitar went’ everywhere with us, and’ everyone would say, ‘Oh Wally, you gonna sing?’ " And of course Waliy did. : The west had always intrigued Wally and soon after they were married he and Virginia packed their bags and moved to Vancouver. Two days later he got a job singing over radio CKWX. By this time Wally was gradually getting out’ of the entertainment business. “There was just no money in it, and I'd seen so many people who apent all day long saying ‘Til get a break,’ and it never comes, I didn't want to end up that’ way.” Wally had’ taken a masonry course previously, and it was this that he fell back on. In 1952 the Walpers decided to come to Castlegar they heard rumors that the pulp mill would be bale here. He figures this was as good a place‘as any to start up his own masonry business. Wally has always been his own boss, he said, and at.74 he still puts in full days. “I'm not retired, I'm just retreaded! I’m thankful that the Lord has given me good health. At 74 I still‘enjoy my work.” In 1961 Don Messer called upon Wally to make a guest -_ appearance on the now “Don Messer Jubilee” which was broadcast over CBC-TV, so Wally and his growing family got in the car and drove to Halifax where Wally filled in for two months, Until five years ago Wally sang in a small band-in town here. ‘Through the years Wally has been involved in Kiwanis and -speaks highly ‘of that. organization as very worthwhile. “I enjoyed all my years in Kiwanis.” Lately “he has bee channeling all of his extra energies into Calvary Baptist Church, where he and Virginia regularly attend. The church is in the middle of putting on a + massive new addition, and Wally is in there, giving advice and putting in a lot’ of’hours to get the structure up. = Those who attend there have probably heard him sing as he is @ frequent tenor soloist. “My main hobby is baking,” he told me. He has made all” the: Walper bread for about. three’or four years, and “I have'as many cookbooks as Virginia!" The Walpers have -tworphildren, Roddy; -also.a: bricklayer-in -Victoria,-and: Donna who works for B.C. Tel in ‘Abbotsford. I've had people tell me that-I didn't sound like a cowboy because I didn’t sing through my nose!” Then he started a soft tune, “My Madonna of the Trail,” another that he wrote. From the kitchen I could hear Virginia humming along. He likes the softer western songs, it seems, and when he couldn't find a song that he liked or that suited his voice, no problems, he would make one up. Although Wally has been out of the. Professional entertainment business since before the television came into being, his life as an entertainer has always been interesting. “You could go ‘pert near anywhere at all, even during the depression you could always do something.
