In WOMEN DO TWICE AS MUCH Men lag in housework time WASHINGTON (AP) — Men are wielding the mop and tending the stove more often than ever before yet still doing only half as much housework as women, a new study shows, Women toil about two hours at home for every one hour of house work done by men, reports sociol ogist John Robinson in the December edition of American Demographics magazine. Yet this represents significant progress in just 20 years, says the study \by Robinson, director of the Survey Research Centre at the Uni versity of Maryland. By comparison, in 1975 women spent three times as long as men on housework, and in 1965 the ratio was nearly six hours of housework for women for every hour worked by a man. “Several important trends account for shifts in who does how much housework,” Robinson reported in his study. These include declines in the share of households with chil dren, a smaller share of married- he found, results from both an increase in the time spent on house- work by men, and a decline in the time spent by women. MALE SHARE In 1985, Robinson found, men av eraged 9.8 hours of housework weekly, while women put in 19.5 hours. The 1975 study found men working seven hours a week on home tasks compared with 21.7 hours for women. And a decade earlier men spent 4.6 hours a week on housework, com pared with 27 hours for women. But despite the increasing male share of the load, men and women still tended to observe a traditional separation of tasks. ‘omen dominated in such areas as cooking, washing dishes, houseclean ing, laundry and ironing. Men, on the other hand, were more likely to con- centrate on household repairs and outdoor chores, while the burden of pet care, gardening and bill paying was shared. Things have evened out somewhat, though, Robinson said. couple households and an number of women in the paid work force. Robinson compared the housework by analysing studies of how people spend their time, done in 1965 and 1975 by the University of Michigan and in 1985 by his centre. Parents shouldn't despair if their child doesn't always do what they want him to — that’s normal, Kuc. zynski says. “In an ordinary, well-functioning family, children only comply with 60 to 70 per cent of parents’ requests,” Kuezynski said in a telephone in. terview from Guelph. A child’s refusal to obey his par- ents can be a sign of independence and maturity. The techniques the child uses in disobeying are skills he's learned from his parents and ones he'll even tually use in dealing with other people. “As we try to influence children, we are also teaching children tech niques for interacting with other people,” said Kuezynski, who studied 70 mothers and their children.” “Parents who use force or direct tend to have children FULL GOSPEL FELLOWSHIP (A.C.0.P.) On the other hand, men did only 32 per cent of bill paying in 1964 but increased their share to 52 per cent by 1985. And men did 53 per cent of the kids bea thing who use very direct non-compliance, such as anger or force. “Parents who use suggestions, bargaining and explanation have children who reason back with them.” Kuczynski breaks down the dif. ferent ways a child disobeys his parents this way: A two-year-old is most likely to pretend he doesn’t hear his parents’ command. THROWS TANTRUM As he gets older, he becomes more deliberate. He may defy his parents by throwing a temper tantrum. If that tactic doesn’t work, he may resort to a more polite refusal — simply saying “no, thank you” to a request. An older child is likely to negoti: ate. “This is saying no without saying no,’ " Kuxzynski said. “A child may simply ask ‘why?’ or provide an ex cuse or explanation — ‘I'm busy right now.’ " The advanced form is bargaining, where a child will offer a deal or compromise — “I'll clean my room, if I can go out on Saturday” or “I'll clean the garage if you help me.” In general, children get more adept at handling their parents as they grow older. Most will use direct defiance less often in favor of negotiation. How often, or how early, a child uses these methods will depend on his family setting. Parents can help their children along by encouraging negotiation from the beginning. “By the time a child enters school, children who have learned to negoti ate with their parents will probably be more skilful in interacting with their peers. They will have a head start by learning to get. along with others.” Negotiating with children doesn't mean giving in to them. “It is important for parents to maintain control over their children,” he said. Among the reasons for the change is the decline in the number of households with children, Robinson pointed out. MORE COOKIN As any parent knows, children mean more cooking and cleaning and other housework, and the majority of that falls to mother. Women with children under age five averaged 22.5 hours of house work weekly in 1985, compared with 19.9 hours for women with children over age five and 17.9 hours for childless women. All three figures are down from prior years. Another ingredient is the simple fact that the share of households containing married couples has de clined. Married women do more work than single onés. The studies show that getting married in 1965 increased a woman's housework time from 15.5 hours weekly to 31.6 hours. Men, on the other hand, eased their burden a bit, averaging 4.7 hours when single and only 4.5 hours after getting married By 1985, marriage increased the house- housework for women from 14.9 hours to 22.4 hours, while men worked 7.9 hours on housework when single and 11.1 hours after getting married HOUSEKEEPING SUPERVISOR Castlegar and District Hospital is accepting applications tor Housekeeping Supervisor.
