Most of us exercise because we feel good about ourselves when we do. Regular activity improves our lives. It costs no more effort than just a daily vig orous walk. You can start today-——but start slowly Whether you walk, attend aerobics, cycle or what ever you choose—don't give up Gradually building up the inten sity, will help avoid the initial aches and stiff muscles. Then you can enjoy your activity and new found energy to the fullest swim, at you preach can be a hard thing to do Of course the children would like to partake in ALL of these activities but the schedules do tend to conflict just a tad. And assuming we can get this straightened out, Mommy and Daddy’s time frames do not always allow for ten activities per day. In~ sorting this out we realized that for the rest of our parenthood lives, we would require two reliable vehicles. Also Mommy would need to see a plastic surgeon about two extra appendage attachments, that is, if the baby is going to get fed, changed and entertained through all the excitement. Daddy may have to work three jobs to help pay for all associated with this cur there are he “fees” riculum.. Then of course uniforms, clothes, etc., etc Wow! (“Rand R”) without the opportunity for. observing the ‘last rites’— dirges, funeral pyres, ashes, etc On the other hand there was a sense of relief, a freeing from obligation in a tyranny of events. But old habits die hard and after forty years of writing, the column had become so much a part of the fabric of the community that after three months I began to feel like a weaver without a loom. And what was worse, not a single day passed but at least one person asked about the wretched column. My sins of omission hung about my neck like an albatross and anyone who is the firstborn of a large family knows, one doesn’t need any new lessons on guilt and responsibility For years I had been like a man with a large butterfly net burns then rises to a catching the stories of people and events, travels and tales letters and history, and pinning them down, enjoying the exer cise but wishing for a rest There is, however, a wise old saying, ‘Be careful what you wish for, you may get your wish” and it caught up with me. The Stories continued to swarm about me but there was no place to put them and because of Parkinson's Law, (the time required to complete a job xpands in proportion to the time available) and still there was no time to rest Moreover, writing is like the old grindstone that as a small ‘ boy I used to turn so laboriously for my grandfather. It requires a constant effort to make it work but it grinds away the excesses and sharpens the wit of the user. Writing, in fact is like teach- ing—a shared experience in which, if one keeps working hard enough, long enough, one eventually learns more than one’s pupils if only because theré is only one of you and many of them. Federation of Foster Parent Assdc teachers, something has to stick One such invaluable lesson | learned early in my long and continuing apprenticeship was the fact that people rarely see themselves as others see them and not infrequently all are wrong. For example, forty years ago when Castlegar was a very young village I started writing under the head, ‘Just Looking, Thank you’ by E.G.O. (the word ‘ego’ being the latin for ‘T) To help the editor of the Cas- tle News (its name then), and also get a possible story I wouJjd sometimes attend council meet- ings. One alderman, now long gone to his lathers, was particu- larly loud, opinionated and abrasive I decided, therefore, to do a column on loud, opinionated and abrasive people. The day after it'came out I met my model and he bore down on me with a gleam in his eye. “Oh, oh,” thought I, spotted himself in the story and I've blown m cover.” “John,” he bellowed, “did-you read EGO’s column about noisy, opinionated and abrasive peo- ple? I couldn't agree with him more. As I have said again and again etc. etc. They should be etc. etc.” Writing a column can be very educational.
