Nelson has started out badly. by giv: ing up a franchise to supply the town with gas for a period of ten years. ‘The city council; however, has imposed con- ditions that the city have the right to purchase at a sum to be arrived at hy arbitration, plus. a fair per cent for in- terest and investment ; thatthe compgny pay to the city two per cent:on its gross earnings the first year, three per cent the second year and five per cent the fol- lowing years: that the site of the works be subject to the approval of the council; that the pipes be laid on cross streets and alleys, excepting where impractic- ‘able, and then by permission from the council: that a bond be given for all re- pairs to the streets subject to the ap- proval of the city engineer; that the gas be supplied a cost not to exceed $2.50 per thousand; that a bond be given to the city that work be commenced in.90 days and be completed in nine months from date of the franchise. ‘ VARIETY THEATERS AND GAMBLING. The election will soon be here and it will be necessary for the candidates for mayor and aldermen to declare, them- seives upon the questions of variety theaters and gambling. Dypring the campaign last spring it was definitely. understood that nothing’ of the kind should be allowed, still a portion: of- the time Rossland has‘had one in ite worst form, box rustling and all. Tt) has been d that p d per- * sons have been allowed to carry on gam- bling a great portion of the summer. If! Th this is what the people want, w."l and good, but if they want it different next year, now. is the time to attend to it. The columns of The Record are open for the of opinion. Had they been magnanimuue they would not have issued &-“Union” claiming a great vic- tory. They won a victory over two of their ‘poor unfortunate members, but not the least bit of a victory over the Record. We had located printers who were willing to take cases on the Record, and informed the union that unless the matter could ‘be settled at once composi- tors would come-under' contract, then a settlement would be off.’ It did not take five minutes to adjast matter#, and we only agreed to do what ‘we were doing before the trouble. But the shabbiest part of it all was the conduct of the Miner. It Jost no opportunity in giving publicity to the fact that the Record was under the ban of the unions, and al- though the difficulty was settled last Friday, nota avord hae appeared in that sheet to that effect. ‘‘British Fair Play” is truly an alien to Mr. Race, editor of the Miner.
