This week the Retiree's was run by Bob York and Clyde :Nyman and it was, as usual, a large success. Between .and 50 golfers took off in pursuit of the elusive par. M usual, many of them were disappointed, but they had fun anyway. Roger.McKeown won the low gross with a 40. Low net was taken by Pat Martin with a 33. Bob Evans won the lea.t putts with a 13 and Eddie Nofield came out on top with a 58 to take the most honest golfer section. In the play for the poker hand, Be,nlie Ferrey had seven 6's to take that department. I had six 7's and as far as I'm concerned, the only difference between seven 6's and six 7's isn't that big. I guess they gave it to Bernie because he didn't have any7's. Next week we shall have a couple of professionals on the job and have they got a program for you! Eric Kohlman and Bill Leaman will prescribe a program of fint and second low gross, closest to the pin on %5 and any one putt on %8 or %9, making it a little tough on our regular patrons. I don't know if you know what mulligans are, but the way this reads says: Play any shot over up to the amount of your handicap and in straight play add any handicap strokes to your total gross score. This sounds like a good-id~. We've had a ball out there so far so I don't think this is going to disrupt things that bad. During the P;8St couple of weeks we have had a couple of characters visit 11:8 at the Rossland Legion. One of them is an old friend from years back. Tommy Anderson now lives in Regina and comes back to visit us every fall. The other one has only visited us infrequently but we want him to keep coming back, Tommy Owens, is a welcome addition to our branch anytime. Like the elder Tom he has a lot of the qualities to make him a good Legion member. Tommy Anderson has been coming to the Rossland branch for a long time. He is our oldest veteran, having served in the Fint World War. We like having him around and we would also like our young Tommy to see if he can grace our branch with his presence on occasion. These people are the kind that make the Legion the kind of a place it is. We have a clientele that makes it a very special place to be. Meanwhile, I would sure like to see a couple of rainstonns. It would sure add to our comfort. While I'm talking about people, it would be a good idea to put in a little plug for a young man who has served Rossland very well over the years. His name is Dave Lawrence and I have never ceased to wonder at the amount of get up and go he has. I can remember when the Labatts were operating. David was quite a factor in that club. But now it seems he has branched out and is doing his thing all over the Kootenays. At least the West Kootenays. Dave is a very capable coach and as such his talents should be used to the utmost to help make our kids in this area the best. On of the young people I would like to mention at this time is a young lady who has been instrumental in the rise of the young Trail-Warfield Stingrays swim team. Her name is Pamela Baines and she is a Rossland girl who has had a lot of success in her swimming. The big thing about this is that she has come along through the ranks until she is probably one of the premier swimmers in this or any other locality. , Young people like this are what makes the sports community so competitive. ll we didn't have the competition, sports wouldn't attract the attention it does right now. Off on another tangent, we have to look at the way our weather man is treating us, not very well, should we say The sunshine is wonderful but the thing we all worry about is, when are we going to get some rain? I guess it will eventually come, but in the meantime we are under sprinkling restrictions and who wants that? To wind up this effort, I want to say that let's hope the baseball players don't see fit to go on strike, that's something we can get along withoul I guess I'll never get over it, but it seems to me that strikes in sports, when these guys are getting so much dough, has to be a real nono. Anyway, that has to be something that these guys have to iron out for themselves. So until next time, I'll say till then! I ~-· -------~ • -- .... _ - -- - - - - .. I ..-....L • .L. - .......
