Prices popular, —— A HIGH HANDED PROCEEDING. Editor Recorp:—We would like to know what authority the Rossland postmaster has to cross out any part of an address on letters and thereby have it delivered at the general delivery wicket instead of putting it in the firm’s box as addressed. For instance, a let- ter was addressed to one of our clerks in care of us and instead of putting it in our box the postmaster had the firm name oi Weeks, Kennedy & Co. erased and the letter put in the general deliv- ery. Now we claim this is a very pen lt handed proceeding. If we like to allow our clerks, companies we represent or clients have their letters addressed to us, Postmaster Wadds has no right to alter their address and put it in the general delivery. If this sort of thing is yoing to be done it will be the means of letters being returned as we never ask at the general delivery, and it was only his expecting the particular and very important letter that made him ask at the general delivery when he did not find it in our box. Again this sort of thing may lead to serious consequences. Supposing there are two or three pergons of the “ame name and the postmaster erases the name of the party it is addressed in care of, which of the two or three per- sons would it be delivered to? We ven- ture tosav the first that asked for it, and he on opening might find it was not for him and the rightful owner would be very much #nnoyed to come along and find tter opened through z the naine of the firm it was addressed in care of. In conclusion we claim that Mr. Wadds ted ina very high handed man- erasing an address in that inan- All he need have done if he did ish to put it in our box was to corner (general delivery.) en the box is ours and we fail to he should not put in all letters to us or in care of us. It was hot enough’ though to cause people to complain and hunt around for shady nooks where they could sip ice cold lemonade and lick their chops ever ice cream. There would have been arush upon the breweries, but for the fact that the brewers are not anxious to be fined too often. Probably the most uncomfortable people in town were the fat men. It made a person nervous even to watch one of these fry- ing in the sun or panting in the shade, with the great beads of sweat oozing from his face and trickling in little tor- rents down his person. The ice water seemed fairly to hiss and singe as it went down their parched throats. Women who bad to be abroad put on their frailest, flimsiest linen, which made them look like airy fairy creatures ready to be blown away by the least breath of air. Probably the hottest place in town-near noon was the sunny side of Columbia avenue, which was practically deserted for a time, while the shady side was lined with people in their shirt sleeves. The boards seemed to shrivel up beneath the verticle sun rays, and the barefooted boya skipped along with a hop, skipand a jump. Even the messenger boys made efforts to move faster when they had to cross a patch of sunshine. Judge Jordan set the pace by appear- ing in a negligle shirt, open coat and broad smile. The judge is accused of having as many cane of one. *e suit the ALMOST FRUIT FAMINE.’ The Warm Weather Plays Havoic with the Local Fruit Market. The warm weather has played havoic with the local fruit market. Durihg the last couple of days it has been unusually bare and the supply not adequate to the demand. This is due to the fruit having spoiled upon the commission men’s hands. There are but few apples and pears and are in great demand. Ba- nanas have been out for some time but there are a few in the market now. Peaches and plums command good prices and are retailing at 10 cents a pound. Eggsare steady at 25 cents, but it isexpected the price will drop when delayed shipments arrive. Bananas are going at 40 cents per dozen and apples five cents a pound. Oranges ure entirely out of the market. So are water mellons and musk mellons, although there are plenty of them around:Spokane. Berries are scarce, a few yet arriving from Puyallup and Yakima. Owing to the ecarcity of lem- ong s they command a raise of $1 in every “The bareness of the local market is due mostly to commigsion men of 8 kane, who do not seem to understand how to properly gauge the Rossland market. They are invariably slow in filling prompt C. O. D, orders, that is causing much dissatisfaction among lo- cal dealers. SEARCH FOR TREASURE. Return from Cocos Island with a Band of Disappointed Voyagers. Victoria, B. C., Aug. 16.—The steamer Aurora, which left here early in the year with a number of sealing cap- tains on board tosearch for treasure alleged to be hidden on Cosmos Island, returned this morning, the trip having been a complete failure. Mrs. Brennan, who believed she could locate the treasure from directions given by her husband who claimed to have found the treagure some years ago, antl- only took part of it, was deeply disappointed. C. Harford came up from Cocos Ieland on the Aurora. He had been on the island for the Costa Rican e treasure, but this seems doubtfal, as the men who went on the Aurora say that He island is covered with:the holes dug b; ure seekers. THE EXHIBIT 0 GO]. Rossland Ores Will Be Placed at the Toronto Ex- hibition. CALL TO \jMINE OWNERS Ald. Will A the Exhibit to Ontario’s Capitol. Ald. J. B. Johnson received a tele- gram from the Canadian Pacific head- quarters this morning stating that free transportation would be granted an ex- hibit of Rossland ores to the Toronto exhibition. Ald. Johnson has been authorized by the city council to take charge of the exhibit and go to Toronto with it. Mr. Johnson, besides being a city of- ficial, isa well informed mining man who will be able to furnish informatian to éastern visitors at the exposition much the mines of this camp. He has taken an active interest in the propowed ex- hibit and is doing his utmost to collect the ores so that a _ representa- tive exhibit may go. The time is so limited that Mr. Johnson, single handed, will not be able to visit all the mines for the purpose of obtaining sam- ples, but the mine owners are earnestly requested toaid in making the exbibit as complete as possible by sending in their Mr. Joh said toa ABOUT ASSESSMENTS, The Court of Revision Will August 20. Maj Cooper is still peging away at the assessinent roll with a persistence that is rolling the figures into long col- umns, which when added, will represent the mystic 7 figures. Delays have been but to an old like the ma jor who has tasted the fiery breath of tne battle field, such annoy- ances are mere trifles. The assessment up to date represents in round * figures $1,440,476, or nearly a million and a half. These figures are subject to change, however, according to the pro- cedure of the city council. By ahurried asscsament the major could have completed the roll ere this. He could have assessed the property without going to the trouble of securing the owner’s name. As the property holds good for the amount, but he prepared to avoid mistakes and be ab- solutely sure by assessing tha property to its individual owner in every in- stance. By this method there can positively be no defects in the roll. ‘To be sure it causes much hard work and trouble bat it issure. As an instance, it may be said that he was obliged to correct over 130 names on assessment papers ip one batch. This was caused | by him making out the assessment papers in the original owners’ names, which were incorrect as the property had changed hands. The railway additions are giving the most trouble. They contain many mineral claims and in order to comply with the law, Victoria has to be com- municated with to learn which of the claims have crown grants. This re- quires a great deal of correspondence and many delays, Another source of delay is met wi ain assessing squatters’ Moet representative of the Recorp this morn- ing that all samples sent to his office would be carefully attended to and he invites the mine owners ¢ to send their ore without delay to his office. . The Le Roi sent down samples this morning at their own ex) It is intended to sen ‘at east 1,000 pounds to Toronto. The ore will go through in baggage cars, thus insuring speedy transportation.
