samen 18, 1991 & Crying, the Cup and the CFL OK, I've been warned before about running contests. “What happens if you run a contest and nobody enters?” they said. “No way,” I said, “this is such a bof- fo idea it can’t fail.” Well, it could fail and it did, miser- ably. i The name-the-column contest was such a bust that I took one of the stupid names I thought up originally and put it on the column. Judging by the response to the contest I doubt anyone cares that much — yeah, I’m sulking, so what. It’s my party and I'll cry if I want to. So what happens when you have a party and just about nobody shows up? You give your presents to the one per- son who did. Lucy Ellen Eaton of Castlegar wins the grand prize of four tickets to the B.C. Tough Man Chal- lenge set for the Cominco Gymnasium in Trail next month. eee Watching the Canada Cup over the past couple of weeks I came to the con- clusion that the best team wasn’t even there. I mean that was a pretty good team with Gretzky — assuming he doesn’t get munched like he did — Messier and the boys. But if you put together a team of the Canadian players who weren't there, either because they were cut by Keenan, injured or other- wise indisposed, I'd be more than will- ing to lay a few shekels on them in a battle with the current Canada Cup champs. Decide for yourself. Here's my line- up for the other team Canada. ** Our strong point, without question, would be at centre ice and in the nets. At centre we've got Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman (or Steve Whizzerman, as I heard one radio sportscaster an- nounce it) and Joe Sakic. Hoowee, not bad, eh? And it doesn’t get any worse be- tween the pipes with the likes of Grant Fuhr and Patrick Roy. Throw in Bri- an Hextall if one of those two wimps out because their wife’s expecting a child or something silly like that. It could geta little shaky on defence but I have a game plan. I'd go with Ray Bourque, Steve Duschene and James Free Agent Patrick for offence, then mix in three killers in Jeff Beukeboom, Marty Mc- Sorley and Daye Manson — let's see how the Swedes and Fins like those boys. I’m going for experience on right wing with Mike Gartner, Cam Neely and Doug Gilmour, who can also play centre. For backup we have Stephane Richer, who can also be a powerplay specialist. Back to the killers on left wing with big, bad Bob Probert and Wendel Clark. Then throw in Joe Nieuwendyk to put the puck in the net after Clark and Probert have pasted the defence- men into the boards a few times. The list could go on and on and you could still come up with a pretty good third team. When you think about it, consider- ing the personnel we have, they might as well engrave the name of Canada on the Cup for the next two or three tournaments at least. eee Will the B.C. Lions sign quarter- back, and the league-leading passer, Doug Flutie, who is going into the op- tion year of his contract? Or will Flutie get tired of playing in a league where he makes more money with his off sea- sonendorsements? - The irony of Flutie’s situation this year is, had he been available, he prob- ably would have been playing a start- ing position with any number of NFL teams who've lost quarterbacks this season. If the Lions don't sign him and he goes to the NFL, it just goes to prove my point that the CFL is a lady-in- waiting league, a minor division for NFL wannabes. “One Of The Ten Best Cars In The World” ’ Road & Track, 1991 “Best Small Car” MotorWeek Magazine 1992 Protegé “1990 IMSA GTU Champion” 1992 626 "One Of The Best Cars In The World, 6 Times” Auto Motor Und Sport 1992 Truck X-Men’s sniper can’t do it all in an under-14 division squeaker @ Kickers are shutout on home field.
