two-year

The - West Kootenay
Teacher Education Program,
which operates through

Selkirk College in Castlegar,
has received funding from the
Ministry of Advanced Educa-
tion, Training and Technology
to continue it’s third year of
operation.

With that, WKTEP has an-
nounced new program for
West Kootenay teachers.

A two-year program, lead-
ing to a Masters Degree in Ed-
ucation from the University of
British Columbia, may now be
taken through the WKTEP ac-
cording to Gerry Ehman, head
of Selkirk College’s Open
Learning Centre.

“At this time we are inter-
ested in gauging the amount
of interest in a Masters De-
gree program and invite ex-
pressions of interest from area
teachers,” Ehman said.

He pointed out that UBC
admission requirements for
this graduate degree in educa-
tion are variable, but do re-
quire a Baccalaureate Degree
with some teacher education.

Candidates’ qualifications can
be evaluated locally by Ehman
at Castlegar’s OLC centre.

The program, totalling 30
graduate credits, is delivered
over two years and would see
the core curriculum offered lo-
cally at Selkirk College during
evenings and weekends.

The specialty courses re-
quired for this degree would
be available from UBC over
two summer sessions.

“This arrangement should
make it much more conve-
nient for local teachers to up-
grade their credentials,” ob-
served Ehman. “This arrange-
ment offers a much greater se-
lection of courses, making it
not only convenient, but flexi-
ble as well.”

Ehman said the core has
been designed to be as broad
as possible to allow pursuit of
as many specialty options as
possible.

Have your ever noticed
that ‘How To’ books seem to be
written by an ‘Ivory Tower
Expert’ who's grasp of reality
seems to be a few bricks short
of a full load and who’s light’s
may be on but there’s nobody
home?

That may be due in part to
the fact that many of these
books, with their detailed 10-
easy-steps-to-solve-your-
problems, appear to be writ-
ten by experts who have nev-
er been there.

Six Steps to the Perfect
Marriage by Dr. Mable Mag-
ilicuty the confirmed spinster
or 10 Easy Steps to Raising
the Perfect Kids by Dr. Jones
who has never had kids. Or

I confess that some of the
books in my family coun-
selling library are written by
individuals who have ‘never
been there.’ But I also confess
that even though they may
say the same thing as some of
my other books they tend to

thing comforting and reassur-

ing about an author who's un- °

derstanding comes from real
life experience and not froma
text book.

In the midst of depression
that seems to make life un-
bearable we don’t need psy-
chological platitudes we need
someone who knows.

When we've been humiliat-
ed and deserted by those
around. us there’s very little
comfort in ‘It will be all right’
as the person walks off with

their friend and your left
alone. :

When we're looking for
someone to help make sense
of our pain we want someone
who has walked a similar
path. Then we need someone
to understand and be there
for us in our loneliness it
helps if they have lived it
themselves and have come
out the other side of their de-

spair.

In the midst of chocolate
bunnies and colored eggs, the
Easter season still manages
to bring us face to face with
the fact that Jesus is our
wounded healer. His words
don’t come from an ivory tow-
er. His compassion doesn’t
come from a text book. His
comfort doesn’t come from
lack of experience. He lived it!

He experienced such depth
of despair and depression that
the scripture records that his
anguish was so deep that
death seemed desirable.

He watches as his closest
friends deserted him. He lis-
tened to the lies and felt the

‘How To’ books can’t help us reach God

pain and humiliation of abuse
at the hands of civic and reli-
gious authorities. And in the
midst of the most excruciat-
ing pain imaginable he reach-
es out to his Father, the one
he has lived to please only to
feel the agony of being reject-
ed and forsaken.

He knows vividly and

graphically what it is to be in- |.

nocent and to suffer for some-
one else. When we are hurt-
ing there really is someone
who has gone through all of
this.

There really is someone
you can go to who knows ex-
actly what it is to be abused,
battered, rejected, aban-
doned, laughed at, ridiculed,
lonely and so much more.

You see; Jesus Christ went
through it all even to the
point of giving up his own life
for you and I.

So, if you’re hurting — Je-
sus cares and he knows exact-
ly. where you're coming from
because he’s been there.

Find the church of your
