Editor, Castlegar News: The events of the past weekend have prompted me to put down on paper my thoughts -of several years, The Castlegar Aquanaut Swim Club has had some 120 active members every year over the past few years, who, by the way, have done very well in swim meets in which ‘- they have competed. It is prac- * tically impossible to get into the Bob Brandson pool during public swimming sessions. I have spoken to mothers who have''been trying for several summers to get their ehildren into Red Cross swim- ming lessons. They are filled up well over a month before the lessons begin. A couple of these mothers, out of desperation, + stricted in physical activities, enjoyed the physical sport of swimming. One polio patient I spoke with had completely regained the use of one leg, and partial use of the other, through swim- ming. An older stroke victim was beginning to regain the use of his right arm, through swim- ming. Many people in this area are troubled by crippling ar- thritis. A friend of mine, who has access to a heated indoor pool year round, manages to keep herself out of the wheel- chair through daily swimming. The only way another friend finds relief from back pains is, once again, through swimming. I am no medical doctor or physiotherapist, but a medical have told me that swimming is one of the best exercises for many physical ailments. In my opinion, and in the opinion of those I have spoken to in the area, Castlegar could ‘eertainly use an indoor swim- ming pool, where swimming would be available to the resi- dents year round. Residents who cannot afford expensive equipment and’ membership fees to participate in other sports, may be able to afford the healthy sport of swimming. Service clubs‘ in the area are sponsoring many worth- while projects. How about some of them getting the ball rolling towards building an indoor pool in Castlegar, which is long overdue! E.
