REED ‘church dropped into a Sunday. School class and began quizzing the students to test the effec- tiveness of their teacher. “Who knocked down the walls of Jericho?" -he asked of ‘one boy. = 1 “It sure weren't me, Rev- rend,” the boy said. = “Turning to the embar- - rassed teacher the pastor-ex- claimed, “I ‘suppose that’s a sample of the kind of discipline yo aintain!” “Now, Reverend, Timmy's a good boy and doesn’t tell lies. = The new pastor of a rural Tf.he says he didn't do it, I bélieve him.” Thoroughly upset, the pas- tor took the matter to the church's board of deacons. After due i the board sent the following. mes- sage to the nonplussed minis- ” “ter: : “We see no point in making an issue of this incident. The. Board will pay for. the damages to the wall and charge it off to vandalism.” That story isa little bit like “the one I heard ‘earlier this week. It seems that one lawyer bet .another lawyer that he couldn't repeat the Lord's Prayer. To his. surprise, his colleague rose to the occasion and began to recite. “Now I lay me down to One of the reasons is that while people are buying Bibles more than ever before, they're not reading the Bibles they're buying. The masses today are biblically illiterate. Bible knowl- edge is at an all‘time low. And that makes it difficult to communicate biblical truth ef- fectively. ~ How many really under- stand the sermons they hear? * The answer is not for the pulpit to stop talking. Part of the answer is for the pew to start reading. In this age of proliferating: translations, no sleep; I pray the Lord my soul -"one can say “that the: to keep... .” Turning to a third col- league who was acting as referee, the oe re- “Biggs’ Burgles ‘Boiling Bacon : Ao Abergavenny youth told police he got drunk and imag- ined he was train robber Ronald Biggs, when he. broke into two local stores, causing damage and stealing 40 Ibs. of bolling bacon. sponded di: “Pay him; I didn’t ‘ “think he knew it.” Both stories are probably apocryphal. But they make a valid point—there is a very real Bible gap between the pulpit and the pew. Ignorance of basic Bible truths and facts, whether - among the non-believers or the professing Christians, is ap- palling. Thousands who: regu- larly attend church every Sun- day are starving spiritually at the Father's table. hard to understand. A But responsibility does not. all rest on the pew. The pulpit must be willing to meet. the people where they are. To ‘preach the Word’ but todo. it in an intelligible way. Sermons tliat do not: com- municate are bankrupt. .And pulpits that fail to effectively transmit truth are in . fact concealing truth. We can close the Bible gap. But it will-take a concerted effort by both pulpit and pew. — Everybody stands to gain.
