INTERNAL REYENUE COLLECTOR Been Crooked Since March 17 and Left Rossland on the 18th of April. . Internal Revenue Collector W.- Jones for the Dominion of Canada, iS skipped the country with the’ govern- ment cash, the amount of which has not yet beer. learned. He has’ collected about $1,000 from Meusre, Thomas & Greiger, which he has not accounted for to the’ authorities. Inspectors Miller and Gill are here from Vancouver inves- ligating the matter, and Jones is noone knows where. . The officers have received two tele- graros, one soying he had passed through Spokane in company with Carrie Free- man, aud another stating hewas in Boston, Mass.. It ia a .miatake about the woman, for she is in Rossland, and no credence is put in the Boston story. The investigation so far shows that Jones commenced his defalcations about the 17th of March last, and it is thought they will amount to at least $3,000 Sad psspibly a great deal more. Thomas & Greiger received the eae check they.gave Jones for $369.84 back from Spokane on the first of this month, which had been, cashed by Oot. I. N. Peyton. Itis not thought Jones will be able to escape arrest. -The-people-who were:aoquainted with Mr. Jones’ conduct of late ‘will not be greatly surprised at this newa: about him. METROPOLITAN HANDICAP.
