Fiercely independent and proud, he once confronted a group of record company ex ecutives in the late ‘60s to complain about being unable to record songs the way he wanted. “Listen you (obscenity),” he told them. “I'm already a legend and I ain't even been a hit yet.” REFUSES TO ATTEND He refuses to attend music awards shows, believing per formers should not compete against each other. NEW YORK (AP) — The. spirit of King Crimson haunts guitarist Robert Fripp. He founded the band King Crimson in 1969 and dis- solved it in 1974, Then he started another group in 1981 and called it Discipline. But the name only lasted a month. “You can define sound and forms of organization and you can be aware of spirit but you can't define it,” he said in an interview. “All four of us realized it and decided to accept our identity. The band was King Crimson. “In Discipline, the sound and organization in fact was very close to King Crimson,” Fripp said. From 1969 to 1974, there was a new lineup in King Crimson each year with Fripp the only person in all of them. The present King Crimson has guitarist Adrian Belew, bassist Tony Levin, drummer Bill Brufurd and Fripp. The group is touring the U.S. this spring and summer and will return home to England between concerts. “The old idea of touring was simply to send a band out for nine months, because it was cheaper, with a cynical disregard for the health of the young musicians,” Fripp said. “The people who sent them didn’t bother to go on them, either. CAUSES STRAIN “It has become apparent that touring that way is very, very short-term. King Crimson broke up every year. At last the penny dropped. Touring was a major strain and a large contributory factor.” The present stabililty, Fripp said, is due to more factors than brief tours. “The deepest thing is com- mitment. If you commit yourself to do something, there is LAAT. perty DB. . aunts Fripp a quality of energy actually in the decision that enables you to fulfill it. “And everyone in the band has his own career outside the group, which takes some of the pressures of egotism away. If one does wish to become identified with his work, one can do that outside the band. The band’s music is a product of the whole group.” Levin recently worked on an album by Frida of ABBA and also played on Eric Clapton's LP. Belew has his own solo projects. Bruford has just released an album of drum and piano duets with the Moody Blues’ Patrick Moraz. Fripp is working on an LP with Andy Summers, guitar player of the Police. ‘After ending King Crimson in 1974, Fripp left the music business for three years. “I went to a school called the International Acad: of Conti in Gloucestershire, England, and lived in a house with 100 other people,” he said. He came to New York in 1977 and played guitar on David Bowie's “Heroes” LP. He produced Darryl! Hall's first solo album 2": years later and made a solo LP called “Exposure” in 1979. In 1980, Fripp plyaed on Bowie's “Scary Monsters” LP. “There were drug problems with one of the members of the League of Gentlemen a previous band he formed and ‘A Dance Band’ in 1980 didn’t fully reflect the band,” he said. “I was ready to work with professionals.” King Crimson released LPs in 1981, 1982 and this year. “Our attention at the moment is on this year,” Fripp said. “We'll see where that takes us. The future is open.” NASHVILLE, TENN. (AP) — Tammy Wynette, country music's “heroine of heartbreak,” hasn't had a No. 1 Wynette: a country lady hit record in eight years but no matter — she plans to remain the “First Lady of Country Music.” “There's room for everybody, music star said. “I'm not moving over for anybody. If I'm pushed over, it’s because I'm not working hard enough. I can still do the job.” “Tm not jealous,” she said. “After all, 1 took somebody else's place when I came to Nashville. I've had a lot of success and awards and done a lot of hard work. I'm not the 42-year-old country worried.” Wynette’s last No. 1 hit was You and Me in 1976. She was voted the top female vocalist by the Country Music Association in 1968, '69 and '70. But awards like that and the No. 1 hits have waned in the past few years with the emer- gence of such younger talents as Barbara Mandrell, Janie Fricke and Crystal Gayle. As Wynette wraps up 18 years in the country music business, she has a new wardrobe, a new hairstyle, a new record producer and improved health. She's been in hospital several times, mostly for abdominal trouble, and has a di on painkillers and ive use of the narcotic, Demerol. ENDURES LIFESTYLE Wynette sings with great emotion, and has endured a tumultuous private life. It's this lifestyle, she says, that’s made her such an intense performer. “T put my heart into my songs,” the slender singer said in an interview during a break in rehearsal. “Most of the songs are about thing I've endured — leaving your children alone, divorces. I try to put myself in that situation. I feel like an average person; I've been a hairdresser, a waitress, a barmaid. I've done all the things an ordinary woman does; T've been there.” Wynette has been married five times, three ending in divorce and one in annulment. Her current husband is George Richey, a singer-songwriter whom she married in 1978. Her most famous marriage was to husband No. 3, ex-singing partner George Jones. Along the way, she had romances with actor Burt Reynolds and singer Rudy Gatlin. During her first marriage, she received 12 electric shock treatments for depression. Since her first release in 1966, she’s sold more than 18 million records and reached the No. 1 spot on the country music charts about 35 times. “I guess I'm proudest of staying in country music as long as I have and performing for people who love me and want to hear me sing,” she said. ENJOYS SINGING “I enjoy singing now as much as I have at any time in the past four of five years,” she said, “I think it’s because I got my health corrected.” She had surgery last October for a hernia. “I feel good; my health is in excellent condition,” said TAMMY WYNETTE .. » First lady Wynette, who remains frail-looking after losing 20 pounds while in hospital. Her chronic poor health has been but one tragic misfor tune in her life. Her father died of a brain tumor when she was B years old. Her third daughter, a two-pound premature baby, suffered a near-fatal bout with spinal meiningitis be- fore she was four months old. In 1978, Wynette was abducted from a Nashville shopping centre and beaten in an unsolved, mysterious crime. Twenty years ago, she was living in a run-down, 60-year-old three-room house on a Mississippi farm with no indoor plumbing, no running water and no stove. She cooked in an open fireplace, carried her water from a spring down the hill and boiled diapers in an iron pot over a backyard fire. She moved to Nashville and met producer Billy Sherrill who discovered her and joined her in writing her signature song, Stand By Your Man. The 1969 song became a standard, and in 1979 she gave her autobiography that title. The book was turned into a TV movie in 1981.
