And yet Moroso points out that “not half as many” as a bone marrow It's the same story with other forms of cancer, Moroso says. Seven years ago 45 per cent of the victims with testicular cancer survived. Today it's 93 per cent. Just 15 years ago 75 per cent of those with ovarian cancer died. Today only 20 per cent die. Moroso says 52 per cent of all donations are spent on cancer research. Last year the local Cancer society collected $12,000 during its April campaign drive, This year the society is aiming for $8,000. Moroso explains that the goal is considerably less because some of the $12,000 collected in 1985 was part of the funds donated to the Steve Fonyo Journey For Lives. About 100 canvassers will be calling on Castlegar residents throughout the month this year. Moroso points out that the local society doesn't only co-ordinate the annual fundraising campaign. It helps pay for air fare for needy cancer victims who must travel outside Castlegar for treatments. “We help pay for their drugs,” she says, not to mention providing home support. “We also do education through the schools,” Moroso adds, noting that the local society has a library of some 100 films for anyone interested.
