United - States, It is reached from the north via the Canadian Pacific. to Arrowhead, on the Columbia river, from there tu Trail by steamer, and from Trail to Ross- land by the Columbia & Western railway. From the south via. Spokane, Washington, by the Spokane Falls & Northern and Columbia & Red Mountain railways, Rossland has forty hotels, with bars, eating and lodging rvoms, and a dozen restaurants. Thore are three weekly news- papers and two. dailies, All other branches. of business ,are well represented, ‘The popula-. tion is variously eatimal from 6000 to 7600. Board and lodging at the, ho- tels, $2 to $3 perday. Meals 25 to 50 cents. Furnished rooms, $2.50 to $7 per week. Itis useless to write and ask ifany particular business would pay here. Everybody must be his own judge and take bis own chances, hile there is not work tor. all who fiaquire, most sober, indus- trious persons who really wish to work have so far been able to obtain it. We would not advise any man to land here “broke” without triends, although many who have done go are doing well, This camp is now setthng down on a business basis. The populace is engaged not only in working the mines and conducting the busi- ness of the town, but are buying, or bonding and developing min- ing property; buying aod gelling real estate; building houses for rental purposes, prospecting and - staking prospectors. Many are here simply looking on in won- derment. We believe it will go on and on until Rossland can boast of a population of 50,000. After that il will probably settle down toa proposition of a pay roll but not for a few years. There are plenty of money here from all sections of the globe; but the principal investors are from the United Brates, with Canada largely interested. The history of the camp reads like a fairy tale, and the riches are scarcely excelled by the imaginary “King Solomon's Mines,” We will not attempt ta discussthe mines in wsingle ar- ticle, aswe have been writing about them for nearly three years and have not been able to keep up with them, The ore ship- 1,200 tons 76 tone 20 tons 1,205 Shipments of ore to smelters fi January 1 to Sept. 20 were aa follows: 44,412 tons 6,588 ton pH Nn Incoypnrated by Royal Charter.
