I refer to the trash about CPR abandonment, and no govern- ment voice raised about letting CPR sell off public property (yes, public property), branch railway lines east and west, north and south, piecemeal. In the 1880s a corridor of land was granted to CPR, millions of acres from coast to coast, and it was to build on this right-of-way a transcontinental rail system, which it did. This was a grant by the Canadian federal government (of the time) on behalf of the Canadian public. If CPR wants to subvert the original agreement, that is, if it wants to continue to close down and abandon branch lines that it cannot handle, (eg. no longer REMEMBER FORD UA mn, Cloth Bucket Seats ji + Full Wheel Covers * 3 yr. 60,000 km. If any selling is to be done, let the gov+ ernment (our so-called leaders and representatives for the time being) do the selling Marathon Realty (CPR) has no right-of- sale to the granted transcontinen- tal lands. Doing this would be an exam- ple of how our government should operate. Instead of recouping the value of grants that are no longer honored, govern- ments turn to the individual tax- payer. That's us! More ta> es! And more and more! In the new year the federal and provincial governments will flounder with expanded federal and provincial deficits More taxes in every budget! The only answer they can come up with, is to tax the low- down public (that’s us), enough to eliminate (so they say). the deficit in the years to come That's a whopping sum per tax- payer. Make the Canadian chartered banks retire the deficits because they created them d continue to explode them. That's what banking is all about The head of the gang is the Royal Bank of Canada. This bank's profit for 1994 exceeded its profit for 1993 by 29 per.cent! Over a billion dollars! The other chartered banks were not far behind. The money to retire the federal deficit in one go is there. They have it. Begin with the federal deficit and pre-empt from the chartered banks the amount required in one Revenue Canada swoop, all the money needed to cancel the federal deficit. This will not kill the banks. Then require the chartered banks and corporations to retire all provincial deficits, using the totat they owe in bank and corpo- rate income taxes they have never paid Billions of dollars! Once the deficits are eliminat- ed, government officials includ- ing senior bureaucrats can consult with any housewife as to How to avoid a fature deficit. Any house- wife can just about quote any modern Pickwick: “One dollar income; stability and true strength! One dollar and 10 cents outgo: disaster and weakness” This is ingrained in Canadian individuals on the home front, though banks try without letup to undermine family economic strength with their pie-in-the-sky credit cards (read: we-own-you- by-credit-kill). Pay as you go! Can any MP or bureaucrat for the time being in office, be per- suaded? How about Jim Gouk? Does he remember his solemn promise before his election, that he will always vote in accor- dance with the wishes of your constituents?
