Some cost a whole penny each; others could be had for two or three or up to 10 or more for a single penny. Ages were spent in making the crucial decisions between the licorice, caramel, marshmal- low and other delights while the shopkeeper stood by, remark ably patient A five-cent bag was guaran- teed to greatly increase one's cur- rent popularity with the ladies, or provide the selfish purchaser with a major-league bellyache More importantly, on special occasions such as Christmas, Easter, Halloween and Valen- tine'’s Day, the display would be expanded with specially tempting offerings plus cards, and it is of these I would like to write Valentine's Day was heralded by the appearance of small, red shiny candy hearts—so many for a penny—cinnamon flavored or hot. The implication is obvious. There were also larger, flat, heart-shaped candies— white and pink with appropriate messages on them: “I love you”, “Be my Valentine” and other “amatory or sentimental” messages. Very useful for offering acci- dentally-on-pur- pose, to the object of one's currem affec- tions and evalu- ating the reaction thereby at a very modest outlay. As well, my wife Bunny reminds me that there were much larger, choco- late-covered marshmallow hearts complete with appropriate messages. These, naturally, were more expensive, possibly cost- ing five cents and suitable for more serious advances in the course of love Along with the candies, there appeared a variety of printed Valentine cards which varied in complexity and cost, from the very simple to the elaborately- decorated items“with attractive pictures and paper lace Books with push-out cards made mass production easier for the less affluent or less energetic. Probably, for valentine traditions have long foots and are highly enduring They originated, according to one authority, about 400 B.C. in the worship of the god, Luper- cus, a Roman version of the raunchy goat-like Greek god Faunus or Pan, and an early fer- tility deity who held sway over woods and fields, loved chasing young nymphs and unwary human maidens. On Feb. 16 their names were drawn from the box at random by young Roman males, whereupon the young woman chosen became the consort of her “winner” for a year of companionship and enter- tainment, usually sexual When Rome converted to Christianity the church fathers attempted to change the pagan lottery by substituting the names of saints. In 270 A.D Valentine, the handsome ‘young bishop of Interamna, opposed the decree of the mad Roman emperor Claudius II, forbidding marriage and was Clubbed to death for his trouble According to legend, while awaiting martyrdom in prison, this young “friend of lovers” fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and sent her a farewell message signed “Your Valentine” Thus, began the custom of young men sending written greet- ings of affection to ladies whom they wished to court. Naturally, St. Valentine gave his name to the new practice The naked cherub who appears on many valentine cards is Cupid, the blind son of Venus, Roman goddess of love and beauty. He goes about firing his arrows indiscriminately at unsuspecting men and women causing them to fall in love with the first person they se¢.
