Teck did not own . a stake in Quintette Coal before Monday’s purchase. COAST TO WorkPL CE Living off Doug Bennett isn’t really a cowboy, but that hardly matters. He’s doing what he loves most — roaming the great outdoors. Glen Freeman NEWS REPORTER Many kids want to grow up to be a cowboy — and then they grow up. Luckily for Doug Bennett, he grew up surrounded by cowboys, and was able to keep his childhood dreams alive. The 35-year-old is currently managing the D Bar D Riding Stables in Ootischenia. He was hired by owners Leo and Arlene McCarthy three years ago and has loved his job ever since. Born on the Alberta foothills, Bennett was raised by a farming family and spent many of his early years around animals. “I was basically raised as a cowboy,” said Bennett. “I just feel like this is what I should be doing. ~ “But I guess you’d have to call me a horseman,” added Bennett. “I don’t have any cows.” Bennett remembers taking time off from being a horseman to sample life out of the saddle. “There was a time I used to log for a living,” said Bennett, “but I was just wearing myself out working for someone else. I sur'e didn’t enjoy that.” Some might say that Bennett left a real job to live in some fantasy land, but they couldn’t be farther from the truth. In fact, preconceived ideas about the simple life of a cowboy are hogtied and branded false as one learns of Bennett’s daily duties. “J think I got three days off last summer,” Bennett said. *I guess you’d have to call me a horseman. I don’t have any cows.’ : — Doug Bennett “I worked all the holidays, weekends, you it. And I worked hard.” lp Rania eee eee neers Mery eee > Work for Bennett consists of virtually living with the 11 horses of D Bar D, shoeing them, training them, feeding them, caring for them when they are sick or hurt — at times Bennett is more like a father than a horseman. So why does Bennett work 14 to 16 hours a day when he could hold down a nine-to- fiver like most other people? “Freedom,” said Bennett. “Freedom to do the things I have to do, when I want to do them.” ; And his work mates don’t hurt, either. “Sometimes animals are easier to work with than people are,” claims Bennett. “They sure are more responsive than some people I know.” However, Bennett is the first to admit that as manager of D Bar D, he is in the Land a | News photo by Glen Freeman oe The D Bar D’s Doug Bennett is one cowboy who earns his title. The transplanted Albertan works 14- to 16-hour days on the Ootischenia ranch, his Home, Home on the Range. tourism. That means working with people as well as horses. “The people that come out here are great,” Bennett said. “We get some folks who are trying to be like the actors in City Slickers, but most of them are just super. “They listen, try hard and really want to learn. It’s interesting watching some of these people in action.” ~ One student from Taiwan really sticks out in Bennett’s mind. “He came out here.wearing a bandanna around his neck, hell-bent on becoming a cowboy,” said Bennett. “He had never been near a horse in his life, but there he was talking like John Wayne. We sure did have fun that day.” That day may have been fun, but there are times when Bennett thinks he just can’t face another long, hard day in the saddle. It’s at times like those when Monique Gaudet, the cowgirl behind the cowboy, reminds Bennett just why he loves his job so much. , “On days like that, we just remember what we used to do for a living,” said Gaudet. “Then we compare it to what we do today.” What they do today is take people on overnight rides, two day horseback trips, hourly rides, as well as instructing those who want to learn to ride. But Gaudet insists it’s the simple things that makes working at D Bar D so rewarding. “There’s nothing like seeing a pretty sight without garbage dumped beside it,” she said. However, according to Bennett, those pretty sights are becoming more and more littered. “I’m no radical environmentalist,” said Bennett, “but I sure wish people would take better care of my back yard here.” Bennett says that finding a pile of gahes® when he is riding makes him see “I mean, how would you like it if ‘drove into the city and dumped my trash all over your yard?” he asked. So Bennett’s advice is to keep it clean, Ci As long as we do, and as long as the skies are blue and the grass is green, Bennett is one buckaroo who will be riding off into the sunset for a long time to come. i Wednesday, March 11, 1992 Acti Action Ad Deadline For Saturday __—s5. p.m., Wednesday Display Ad Deadline For Saturday. 5 p.m., Wednesday Action Ad Deadline for Wednesday Display Ad Deadline-For Wednesday 5 p.m., Friday ACTION ADS — 365-7266 — 5 p.m., Monday ‘v_ ANNOUNCEMENTS 17 Notices CRAFT suppli craft cl knitting machine club at the Craft Corner. 365-5801.
