The $700 million expansion and’ modemization of the Celgar Pulp Mill took off in an upwards direction last week when the stack that carries the exhaust gasses from the recovery boiler and the Number One power boiler was extended by 50 feet to make way for the new building. The stack, formerly at 250 feet, was extended during the normal spring shut-down of the mill. The new recovery boiler building being constructed will stand 250 feet itself when completed. Now at 300 feet in the air, the exhaust from the stack will not interfere with the who will the building, or the completed building, The extension was put in place with a 165 tonne crane that was on the site for the week. The 50-foot extension went up in two sections of 20-feet and 30 feet. The extension pieces are a mild steel shell with a non-corrosive stainless Steel interior. Winds delayed the work and the extension was barely secure prior to the scheduled restart of the boilers at midnight Thursday. The work was completed by the Custodis Chimney Repair Com- pany of Vancouver.
