ROSSLAND. - This office and the citizens of this yicinity -are constantly re- ; ceiving inquiries concerning this section of the country, which are diflicuit to answer by letter, so the Recorp gives the following information for the beneht of all: Rossland is situated in British Columbia, eight miles from the international boundary line be- tween Canada and the United States, Itis reached. from. the north via the Canadian Pacific to Ar , on the C bia * Tivey, from there tv Trail by , steamer, and from Trfil to. Ross- land by the Columbia & “Western railway. = -From the south via, Spokane, Washington, by the Spokane Falls & Northern and Columbia & Red Mountain railways, Rossland has forty hotels, with. bars, eating’. and ‘lodging rvoms,.and a dozen restaurants. There are three weekly: news- papers and two. dailies. other branches of business are well represented. ‘The populg-; tion is variously esti from, 6000 to 7500. Board and lodging at the ho- tels, $2 to $3 per day. Meals 25 ‘to 50 cents. Furnished rooms, $2 50 to $7 per week. Itis useless to write and ask * ifany particular business would pay here. Eve! rybody must be his own judge and take his own ‘chances, While there is not work tor all who iaquire, most sober, indus- tiious persons who really wish to work have so far been ‘able ‘to obtain it. We would not advise any man” to land here ‘‘broke” without , friends, although many who have done so are doing well, This camp is now setthng down on. a business basis. The populace is engaged not only in working the mines and conducting the busi- ness of the town, but are buying. or bonding and developing min- ing property; buying and selling real estate; building : houses for rental purposes, prospecting and taking prospettors. Many are here simply looking on in won- derment. We believe it will go op and on until Rossland can boast of a population. of 50,000. After that it will probably settle down to a proposition of a pay rol) but not for a few years. There are plenty of money here from all secti¢ns of the globe; but the principal investors are from the United States, with Canada largely interested. ‘The history of the camp reads like a fairy tale, and the fabulous riches are scarcely excelled by the imaginary “King Solomon’s Mines,” We will not attémpt to \2 discuss tte mines in asingle ar- ticle, aswe have been writing about them for nearly three years and have not been: able to keep up with them, The ore ship- meuts speak for themselves. ‘The town has won an enviable reputation for law and order, It is is supplied with waterworks and electric lights. ‘The main street License Cum mis-ioners for the City or Rossland, lor a licenze to sell liquor by retail in the premises known as the! + | Hotel Allaa, situated lots 13 and 14, in block 29, subdivision of district ae Pr it.
