Also music of Fiji, Tahiti and Hawaii. By Pastor Donald W. Reed * With’ its val- entines and candy boxes, February might well be call- ed Love Month. It's the time of {the year when Cupid ‘gets ‘into the limelight. Who was the wit that defined love as an itchy feeling inside your heart that you can’t scratch? Not bad! But of course love is so much more than that. True love involves a te- sponsiveness to the total per- son of the one loved. You don't fall in love with a body but with a whole person. There is nothing wrong with physical attraction but it is not the No Excuse. whole. Love sees all that makes up a person, and likes what it sees, In true love there is not only a feeling of pleasure but also of reverence. So far from asking for the loss of self- respect, it always builds sacred- ness into personality. The greater the intimacy, the great- er the sacredness. True love embraces a willingness to assume respon- sibilities as well as to accept privileges. It gives as much as or more than it takes, It thinks more of the happiness of the other and of what they like than of my own happiness and what I like. “Worked Like a Charm The Rev. Dale Barrick's “no excuse Sunday" pleased al- most everyone, f In response to parishion- ers’ wide range of reasons for not attending services, Bar- tick's Great Hope Baptist Church in Carlisle, Pa., offered the following: : @ Cots for those who like to sleep in. Hard hats for those who feared “the roof might fall in if 1 came to church.” _ © Blankets for those who found the sanctuary too cold. ‘ «Fans for those who found the sanctuary too warm. e Sand for those who pre- ferred the beach. e Eyedrops for persons’ who stayed out late on Satur- day night. e Cotton pads for the ears of those who found the organ too loud. * e Scorecards for those who contend the church is full of hypocrites. e Television sets for per- sons who prefer services on the screen, © Guides to direct a tour of the church's seven-acre site for those who prefer to worship the creator in nature. “Our average attendance is around 100,” said the 36-year- old Barrick. “Recently we had 153, soI guess it helps to show people you want to meet their needs. “We had a couple of failures, though,” he said, “We couldn't find hearing aids for people who say they can’t hear the preacher, and one fellow in- sisted he would only come if he could shoot target in practice for the opening of Pennsyl- vania’s deer season. “We passed on that one.” True love attracts like a magnet and never wearies. It is marked by unusual joy in the company of the loved-one, and by pain in separation. ‘True love is characterized by the mutual enjoyment of each other without the need for constant physical expression, Young people who can't be together without petting sim- ‘ ply don't have adequate re- sources for marriage. Marriage is not legalized prostitution. The physical is only.a part of a larger whole. It derives its meaning as an expression of love that grows out of the totality of the - relationship, not only one phase of it, I maintain that purity | before marriage is the greatest safeguard against impurity in marriage. True love always ‘builds up; it never destroys. Its chief concern is for the personal well-being ‘and self-esteem of the’one loved. It never de- preciates or disparages, in- ‘ private or in public. Every husband should be the number one cheering fan of his wife. True love shares a feeling that you understand each other unusually well. It is based on. mutual acceptance and mutual- ity of response and should increasingly result in a fusion of minds. . True love communicates; it wants to share everything. It.is never reluctant or reticent to express itself. “Say it with -—% candy, say it with flowers; your love, let me measure or weigh it; say it with a ring or with any old thing, but say it!" The one truly loved will never have to utter such an appeal. True love will be dynamic in its growth, energetic in its development. It needs room to __ expand and refuses to be confined. .
