Whitewater Ski Area is again buz
zing with activity as crews get the ski
hill ready for this winter's ski season.

Improvements and annual mainte
nance have been underway since the
new board of shareholders assumed
operation of the ski area last month.

Whitewater area manager Mike
Adams, one of the new shareholders,
says work at Nelson's major winter
tourist attraction commenced as soon
as a tentative purchase agreement was
worked out, in early August

He said the agreement has now been
completed and the new shareholders
are currently planning immediate and
long-range programs to ensure a posi
tive future for the ski area

He said the new owners and
management would like to offer
appreciation for the efforts of a large
number of people and business that can
take credit for the existence of White
water Ski Area

reminder to his team this week as they commenced the
countdown to Friday's matchup at B.C. Place Stadium: —

Football fans on the West Coast see the Friday clash
as the highlight of the season so far with more than 49,000
advance tickets sold, about 10,000 under capacity.

The Lions lead the CFL in attendance this year and

have not had a crowd under 40,000, with a high of just

1986 because of better defensive play.

“Edmonton's always had the offence and now the

defence is getting good again,” said Matthews, the former
Edmonton defensive co-ordinator who became head coach
of the Lions in 1983. “The Edmonton victory over the

Lions in early July was the first for the Eskimos against

B.C. since Matthews joined the Lions as head coach.

KEY INJURIES

Matthews said the Lions have been fortunate to stay
ahead of the Eskimos after injuries sidelined receiving
star Mervyn Fernandez and cornerback Darnell Clash,
the latter the CFL punt-return yardage leader.

Fernandez was the CFL's most outstanding player in
1985. He suffered a broken bone in his right hand in the
July game at Edmonton and missed seven games while on
