Doug Mac- Kinnon is reported under- going intensive therapy at ; the G.F. Strong Rehabili- tation Centre in Vancouver following a massive stroke in March. MacKinnon's wife, Pat, told the Castlegar News Tuesday that the 44-year-old alderman started intensive / therapy this week and will be “reassessed” in six weeks. “He's okay,” Pat MacKin- non said. However, she said doctors “still consider him quite sick (though) not life endangering.” She said MacKinnon still has no movement on one side of his body and cannot speak, though “his mind is clear.” She said it was three weeks after he had regained con- sciousness before she could see that he understood what was said to him. She said he now under- stands, but cannot commu- nicate. Still, she said his condition is-far better than doctors in Kelowna — where he was firat taken — had anticipated. “It’s just a wait and see case,” she explained. Howe- ver, she doesn't believe he will be the same as before the stroke. MacKinnon was first elec- ted last November to a two-year term. Meanwhile, the other five alderman have Fy 1 Aa DOUG MacKINNON had to take up MacKinnon's civie duties in his absence. When asked if council in- tends to replace MacKinnon, Mayor Audrey Moore said Tuesday council would make a move if it received his resignation. But so far it has not had any notice from Mac- Kinnon. She added that a summer election wouldn't generate much interest from the elec- torate. ‘Under the provincial Muni- cipal Act, council would be required to hold a byelection if MacKinnon resigned before the first week of Scptember. After that, council could postpone filling the seat until the regular November muni- cipal elections.
