B6 CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, September 7, 1978 Room Dividers: Practical and Decorative Solution Many of our homes are not as spacious as we would like them to be and in order to define areas as to their specific use, we use dividers, } A divider can simply be an article of furniture placed in such a way as to create another “Room.” For example, ifa sofa or loveseat is placed away from a wall the area behind it becomes available to use for other purposes, Low book shelves, cabi- nets, credenzas, desks and sofa tables are pieces that could be backed up to the sofa to form a study area, a specific eating area or just a little retreat with a single chair, table and lamp for reading or hobbies. When the space that furni- ture would take up is not avail- able a hanging divider becomes more suitable. Open-weave fab- ric that has no right or wrong side, hemmed at the top and bottom and held taut by wooden or decorative rods and hung by hooks or chains is very attractive, If a bold print, stripe or geometric patterned fabric is used it can be the means to unifying several plain colors in walls, rugs, drapes and furni- ture and thus creates a bright atmosphere and can be used as a focal point to give a room “personality.” Room dividers that would add architectural interest could be done with ceiling-to-floor beams or posts finished with a dark stain and left with a rough natural texture, covered with burlap wallpaper or fabric, or even mirrored, These can be placed within inches apart to + form more of a “wall” or several feet apart just to give the illusion of a wall and. still ‘maintain an open and airy feeling. Bureaucracy-Speak In This Speech, MEW a Lot to Do In a very real sense, as they say in Foggy Bottom, MEW has a lot to do with CAT. Officials also say it’s a pity GOI can't get along with GOE. CAT (conventional “arms transfers, or weapons sales) is a 1 nas Those of us who have budgets to fit our decorating plans into can always consider the good old standbys; concrete blocks and planks, Available in ways to allow storage for items of different shapes, The blocks can be painted and the planks ‘ painted or covered with fabric or other suitable coverings. interior Tips €- Lin Krause many sizes and designs and quite sturdy because of their weight; they can be stacked to various heights and in various The dividers of the past— folding screens—are fast com- ing back into their own. GOE (which, ironically, is a variation on the spelling of the Yiddish word for a non-Jew) is how state department tele- grams refer to the government of Israel. GOE, of course, is the yovernment of Egypt. Initials can be used as verbs, as well as nouns, in this kind of buro-speak. It would be an absolute nightmare, in state department terms, were a DCM to be PNGed. DCM is deputy chief of mission, the number-two man in any embassy, and to be declared Persona Non Grata is to be thrown out of the host country for some offence, real or imagined. Nothing seems to produce acronyms faster than the field of arms control. In a recent seminar on the SALT (strategic arms limitation talks), a speak- er recently uttered the follow- ing sentence: “ALPS, of course, is just a quick-fix MAP, since both could be described as an MX.” Everybody around the table nodded gravely. The subject was a mobile missile that the United States wants to build (or MX, for short). Multiple aim point, or The y breed like rabbits in ACDA (arms control and disarmament agency). First. there was MIRV (multiple independently targettable re- entry vehicle) or a multi-headed missile, It’s more sophisticated than MRV (multiple re-entry vehicle), but not nearly as tricky as MARV (manuverable re-entry vehicle}. The United Nations bears a heavy responsibility for a whole family of jargonized ini- tials and acronyms. It is pos- sible to say, and be understood, by fellow jargon speakers: “The Germans Took Cobalt But Gold Of No Interest « A Toronto dentist heads a syndicate that controls a gold and silver mine in Mexico that provided a secret source of cobalt to the German war machine before the Second World War. Dr. Bill Fleming says the syndicate—operators of Blyth- wood Mining Ltd.—will develop the Senora, Mexico-located mine with the help of $100,000 from the Roman Corp. Ltd., a Toronto holding company. There are many ways to make a folding sereen of your own, but basically and in its simplest form a screen consists of three “doors” hinged together that stand when opened to about a 90-degree angle. A folding screen can easily be made by purchasing normal bi-fold closet doors and hinging them together. The solid ones covered with wall coverings and possibly trimmed with molding can set a very formal atmosphere to any room. Don't forget a divider has two sides which can be deco- rated to suit the side of the room it faces. To get away from a solid divider, try hinging three or more frames. together with fabric stretched or gathered inside the frames. Don't forget the benefits of the staple gun, A very talented person could also macrame inside the frame for a custom look, Finally, in addition to many ideas that are not men- tioned at this time, we can't overlook the use of plants as dividers. Whether tall, on stands, or hanging they can. Hydro Gets Go-Ahead For Revelstoke Dam British Columbia Hydro has received final approval to build the controversial $1.2 billion Revelstoke Dam. H. D. DeBeck, provincial water rights comptroller, says in a letter to Labor Minister Allan Williams that a water licence, earlier issued to Hydro authorizing construction of a hydro-electric dam near Revel- stoke, has been amended to incorporate the terms of the Cabinet Appeal Committee de- cision of June 23. The letter was made public last Thursday. Williams is chairman of a special cabinet appeal com- mittee which ruled Sept. 12, 1977, that the hydro-electric project could proceed with only minor changes made to the conditional water licence De- Beck granted Hydro in Decem- ber, 1976. The committee did not issue a final decision until last June pending negotiations be- tween Hydro and Canadian Cellulose Ltd. which opposed the licence. Also appealing the licence were the Scientific Pollution and Environmental Controls Society, the B.C. Wildlife Fed- eration and West Kootenay. The settlement came after meetings between union lead- ers and Labatt’s Brewery in Victoria, over problems con- nected with the return to work. Brewery workers in Vie- toria, the Vancouver area and Creston had voted last Wed- nesday to accept a new two- year contract with the com- panies.
