and benefits in Canada are catching up
to those in the United States and

sfer across the border may hinge on
whether their benefits and total com-
pensation after tax will at least be
maintained, if not improved,”’ the
Hewitt study says.

The company found that hourly
compensation costs in Canada (in U.S.
dollars) were 98 per cent of those in the
United States for manufacturing
production workers during 1988. This
was up from 83 per cent in 1985.

The study does not say what'part of
the increase is a result of the rise in the
value of the Canadian dollar during
that time.

The figures are from a comparative
measure of hourly compensation costs
in the two countries, as developed by
the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

STUDIES FIVE

Compensation includes both wages
and benefits - it is defined as all
payments to the worker before deduc-
tions, as well as employer payments for
either government or company benefit
plans.

Hewitt did a further comparison of
salaries only for five specific jobs
types.

It found supervisors*did better in
Canada, but for more senior jobs, pay
was higher in the United States.

The study expressed all compen-
sation in local currencies. Included
below, in parentheses, are the
Canadian translations of U.S. dollar
figures.

These data corroborate the frend of
Canadian hourly labor costs rising to
near U.S. levels, Hewitt notes.

‘One of the cultural differences
between the two countries is reflected
in the relatively longer periods of paid
time off in Canada,”’ the study says.

After five years of service, 99 per
cent of Canadian employers grant
three or more weeks of paid vacation,
compared with 71 per cent in the
United States.

Canadian work weeks are also
slightly shorter, averaging 36 to 40
hours, says Hewitt, compared with 38
to 40 hours in the United States.

An Ontario couple earning $50,000
would also pay bout five per cent more
of gross income in taxes than their
counterparts in New York State.

On the subject of employee benefits,
the paper says:

 Employer-sponsored pensiofis in

faster vesting than in the United States.
This means an employee does not have
to be with the company as long to be
able to take benefits with him if he
moves.
