But if you're out speeding on the roads between June 28 to July 5 you can be guaran- teed that you will pay the price. The summer speeding campaign is already in full swing, as some of the more hurried drivers might already know. Castlegar RCMP mem- ber, Constable Stu Schmidt, would like to remind all drivers that the combination of speeding and other poor driving habits can be a lethal recipe. Schmidt said that well over 70 per cent of accidents have been attributed to speed- ing. In April 1993, during the spring speeding campaign there were 1,308 speeding citations and 1,177 warning handed out in the Kootenays alone in a six day period. The summer speeding program is sponsored by ICBC in coop- eration with the RCMP. Cady takes own life Area politician charged with sex offences SHARLENE IMHOFF ¥ Sun Editor Regional District of Central Kootenay Chairman, George Cady, died June 26 in hospital after he found near his home, suffering from a single gunshot wound A police report issued from the Nelson subdivision of the RCMP Cady, 67, died at Kootenay Lake District Hospital at 2:44 p.m The day prior, June 25, Cady had been arrested at his home in Kaslo and charged with 15 counts of sexually abusing six young boys. The alleged offences occurred in the West Kootenay region between 1964 in Warfield and 1986 in the Lardeau Valley region and included buggery and indecent assault on boys ranging in age from 12 to 16.-Cady was also charged with two counts of admin- istering stupefying substances. Due to Cady's death, which Police say is not foul play, Crown Counsel in Nelson refused to state George Cady comment further on the charges of sexual abuse. Police are still investigating the death, under the direction of Corporal Berdahl of the Kaslo RCMP. Cady, a civic politician for almost four decades, was re- elected as chairman of the RDCK board through acclamation last Lights will flash at 24th Street intersection SHARLENE IMHOFF Sun Editor 2 sections 26 pages Ann Landers . . 10B Business .... we 3B Comics............+.-..-L0B Editorial . sreeeneee 4A Sports - 7A Weather . 3A Profile ................... 1B Classifieds...........11B Entertainment ....... 2B Persistence and perseverance has paid off for the Parents of children who. use the 24th Street intersection crosswalk to and from school each day For the past wvo years, parents. who say the crosswalk is unsafe have actively lobbied the government to have something done. After much letter writing, telephone calling, meetings with Transportation and Highways officials, and most recently, a protest, the provincial government has-decided that pedestrian activated lights will be placed at the intersection to better mark the crosswalk “It boiled down to hard work and persistenge. Now everyone's happy with the result,” said Castlegar City Councillor and parent, Lawrence Cheroff. Officials from the City of Castlegar, local RCMP and School District No. 9 were all in favor of making the crosswalk safer, and most agreed the only acceptable solution was the installation of pedestrian activated lights. The City of Castlegar stated it would be willing to cost-share the installation of lights, even though the responsibility to begin the initiative is the Ministry of Transportation, since the crossing is on Highway 22, and not city street As well as persistence, the added support of Rossland-Trail MLA Ed been credited with the decision to install a pedestrian locals did all the work in making this happen, they applied a idded voice aS MLA helped put them over onrey from hts office in Victoria Conroy has als¢ light. “Th k pacssure perhaps my the top. According to a press release from Conroy's office, the goal is to complete the installation of the new flashing crosswalk signs by. the start of the fall school term. The release stresses that even though the lights will help the situa- ion, the dangerous ‘driving habits of motorists who continue to pass other vehicles stopped at the crosswalk must not continue. As well, children must understand that activating the flashing lights does not guarantee them safe passage across the intersection. They must contin- ue to be attentive to traffic movement and not step Out into the intersec Uon until traffic has stopped. In addition, the ministry has strongly recommended to the school district that adult crossing guards be present at the intersection when the children are en route to and from school We don’t have a problem with that at all. The safety of the children has always been first and foremost with these Parents. You can bet that by September, crossing guards will be there to compliment the new pedestrian light,” finished Chernoff said ¢ Do you recognize these faces? Officials from the Missing Children Society of Canada say they have reason to believe that a mother, who abducted her noncustodial children in 1987 from Republic, Washington, might be living in the West Kootenay area. The society is hoping that by publishing computer-aged photographs of the missing children and mother, area residents might recognize and report their location.
