BETTER TO FORGIVE, ‘Men who so far forget themselves ae to allow dissipation, such as wine, wom- en’and gambling to leadjthem to commit crime, even to offending the criminal Jaw, when they awaken toa realization of their sina should not. expect newspa- pers and the public generally to be very much more charitable toward them than they have been to themselves, and it ili becomes such men,to hold hatred and spite toward those who have disapproved oftheir conduct. It is-better by far tq show a meek and contrite spirit, and overlook acts or words of disapproval of their conduct.. Those who are helped by their friends out of difficulty and for- given by the general public should also forgive, although they can no more for- get than their bad actions can be foi got- ten. It doés not show a proper spirit to pass one’s former friends without recog- nition when they are willing to recog: nize the transgressor. A man who is made ef the right kind of stuff, who, hasescaped punishment threugh the leniency of those who have the enforcement of the: lawin their hands and the timely assistance of their friends, will acknowledge it was all his fault, hold mo malice or ill will, and go absut Pro} ing ly hia actions that he de- sires to live'a better Mfe. Thatis the pest way, and if he should unfortunately fall again there will still be generous and peneyolent people to help him. The ‘Nelson what it says ie not true, and the Colo- nist should. not..be so swift in giving creeduce to such radical statements. A few of the miners who are deprived of work on account of the trouble in the Coeur d’Alenes may be coming into British Columbia, but.they are by no means a dangerous class, or im any way @menace to good government. There are some newspapera in the Kootenay that are trying to lay a foundation for the mine owners to .stand upon in ‘case their arbitrary acts bring trouble. —S—_—_—_— “There is little or _no use of the public meoting to discuss the waterworks bylaw at this late hour. The sin of omission has already been committed by the mayor and the city council. The people have been totally ignored. Pos ee views supporting bylaws, but ae | none appeared: in the morning issue, it iafairto presume that they were not very successful. i ——— TQ EVADE THE LAW. The Slocan mine ownere who. -have organized and combined against the working miners, and for the purpose of defeating the effect of the eight-hour law, they try to fortify their position by. saying: > “Jt means reducing the boars of labor jn the mines from 20 hours a day to® 1 hours, as many of the mines are so cir- cumstanced that three shifts cannot be worked to advantage. This means a re-~ duction, of 20 percent in the production of many mines, and a reduition of 20 per cent. in the development work being money, in the way of paying exorbitant. prices for city printing. The Recorp denies the right or legal- ity of the mayor and town council to saddle any expense “of tne meeting which isto be held tomorrow evening upon the ratepayers of Rossland. There appears in the morning paper and in the Recorp au advertisement of that meet- ing, ordered by the city clerk, who saye it ig to be paid for by the city. This is an outrage, but itis only in keeping 6 | with the conduct of Mayor Goodeve, who seems to be running things to suit himeelf. ; WANTED.—A good lady solicitor. Address A. B., this office. th carried on in mine: ty lor pro: duction, and a reduction in the supplies used in the mines.” ‘That is not true and they know it, and they further know that any sensible person about a mine knows if. Three shifts‘can be'worked in any mine that two shifts can be worked in, and’ when machinery is to be used and fires are to be kept 1t can be doneat a saving in- stead of aloss. Itisonly a pretext to evade the law. oftaking them into their qd abill Unless the mayor p totell the Mayor is out with people éxactly what he proposes to do with the $150,000 ifthe bylaw is ap- proved he had better keep off the public platform. ——— It has been suggested that ‘since the chiei of the fire department is permitted to sleep away from the fire hall that he ‘be provided with s horse and buggy so he will be sure to be on hand at the be- ginning of fires whieh may occur. There ja no use of thecity council quibbling ever this matter, for it is neceseary if the chief ia not to sleep at the hall. —_—_—_— The mine owners of the Slocan are making a great roar because they were not consulted regarding the passage of the eight-hour law. It is now fully demonstrated that those who secured the passage of that beneficent law acted _ wisely in not asking their.assistance. —_—_ Representatives of the Miner were a meetiig tomorrow night for the discussiun of the wateworke and street improvement bylaws. It is to be hoped that the city will not be required to pay for this printing, although the police are required te distribute them, anda has been idized to eupport the bylaws with the public & Oo. No: —— Idaho, May 18.—All the and at Mullan Iewas not expected that the miner Id clove until Wednesday, but the rg have decided to shut down stonce in order to show the miners’ union that they intend to comply with the orders. ‘The management of the Last Chance je apparently still undecided, but none oiits miners have taken out the permits. Ipis generally believed that itis the intention of the mine owners to ‘remain dosed down all summer for the, purpose ofstarving out the members of the pres- ent unions, This will mean hard times on Canyor ‘reek and at Mullan, but will probably not hurt Wardner 80 much, as the work atthe Bunker Hill, and Sullivan will continue, and it is probable that the Lt Chance will be one Of the firat to nzume operations, People here are receiving letters from Colorado, California, Utah and varioue otler parts of the country asking ques- ting about the situation. Many of the men write that they are miners but are not uniun men and are anxions to come tothe Coeur d’Alenes to work. It ix thoaght that little trouble will be hadin scuring full forces from these men when the mines are ready to resume. opera- tions. * ‘The new quarters for the prisoners are needy for occupation. The new prigone are about 200 yards from the “bull pen” in which most of the prisoners are con- fined. The new quarters are. much better than the old and will afford ample accommodations forall of the 500 pris- oners now in confinement, Kitchens are being built and ovena erected as if for use for many monthe, Itis generally believed here that the prisoners are being very well fed, in fact they are getting food fully 2s good as that eerved the soldiers. Dr. Stratton ins recently examined the food and pro- nounced it allright. The rations served by Tony Tubbs, who has the contract, include beef, bread, coffee, potatoes and other vegetables, The meat ia all right, being killed on the ground. It is thonght probable that Judge Mayhew wiil not issue the writ of /ha- beas corpus, which has been applied for the retease of the county commissioners. «taken to the state supreme court, Le Roi LIVERY SALE and FEED STABLE.
