will drift, from Grade 5 to 10
without having to do homework

Studying is a definite skill in

pancake breakfast will be held

church. A program of music by
the students will follow the

_Two varied youth pro-
grams are now well under way
for this fall. The senior teens
(Grades 10 - 12), who meet bi-
monthly for a Bible study at the
home of Art and Betty Wiebe,
are currently studying the
Second Coming of Christ. So-
cials are planned for every al-
ternate weekend. So far, they

spends three hours every night
in her room studying, why

Your child may not study
because he or she has never
learned how. Or, your child
may study, but use poor
methods,

For example, do ‘most
parents reallze that 95 per cent
of all students limit studying
for tests to reading over notes
(usually on a bed) and that this
is one of the least effective
ways of learning? In fact, it is
inefficient.

The following ideas will
help you develop a’ plan with
your children. It will require
the two of you.

MATERIALS

Provide a-desk and good
lighting; a comfortable environ-
ment, but not too comfortable—
lying on a bed too long is bad.

Provide a dictionary, a
thesaurus and an almanac and
encourage your children to
utilize them constantly, A worn
out thesaurus will raise marks
by at least one grade.

Buy a large blackboard
(5'x10") because writing on one
is much more active mentally
and physically than, for exam-
ple, lying on a bed or couch.

Provide an everlasting
supply of colored pens (felts)
and flashcards. Colors can be
used to classify study notes;
liven them up, reduce boredom
and flasheards are an active
study technique rather than a
passive one.

Use food as a stimulant and
as a support for positive
studying. A student indulging
ina hot chocolate is less likely
to be asleep on the bed.
Remember, hard work and
coffee breaks go hand in hand.

All students make the
error of limiting studying to,
reading over notes. While this
is better than nothing, it is
much too passive a process fora
growing active’ teenager—
especially if this is done on a
bed or couch.

Students must write an-
swers when studying because,
the pain in the wrist stimulates
the brain and memory pro-
cesses. Even flashcard answers
should be written—also, stu-
dents who rewrite notes get
much higher marks than stu-
dents who simply read notes.

feel shy about this as teachers
will teach on the phone—it’s

school on an ongoing basis.
Concerned parents equal con-
cerned students.

Read this idea sheet to
your son or daughter and
discuss the possibilities. Devel-
opa plan of action. Evaluate the
plan every week.

Pay your children to study

by the hour.

Offer incentives for certain
achievements, example: A =
$10, B= $8, C+ = $6,C = $4,
Pass = $2.

Offer a, reward (such as a
horse) for passing the grade.

Hire a tutor (they are
available upon request from the,
school.)

Withdraw privileges (such
as use of the car, or movie, or
weekend freedoms) for nonco-
operation,

WHAT STUDENTS MUST DO

Make a study schedule (on
a calendar) and make it a
priority over socializing activi-
ties. Be realistic, then live by it.

Learn to simplify a course
by rewriting it on “crib” sheets
(use your, own shorthand).
Make lists.

Classify notes and things
to learn by the use of colored
pens—this avoids boredom, in-
¢reases memory power.

Use flashcards (make
them), but write out continu-
ously those which you cannot
remember. Do not study ones
you know.

He has served continuously
on the former Kinnaird council
‘and present council since 1957,
with the exception of the three-
month period which was filled
by an. interim council when
amalgamation of the two muni-
cipalities took place.

Sixteen years of this ser-
vice was in the capacity of
finance chairman, at present
holding this same portfolio; he
feels this financial background
will continue to service the
community well.

His background of service
on all council committees has
given him a comprehensive
knowledge of all problems re-
lating to the community.

Rust was elected the first
chairman of the Regional Dis-
trict of Central Kootenay and
served in that capacity for six
years. He also served four
years on the board of manage-
ment of the Castlegar and
District Hospital, and three
years as a trustee of the Muni-
cipal Finance Authority which
was set up by the municipalities
of this province to organize and
sell bond debentures for muni-
cipal sewage, water and pollu-
tion control projects,

He served seven years as
chairman of the West Kootenay
Union Board of Health, as well
as three years on the executive
of the Provincial Health Asso-
ciation — one year as- its
chairman,

A member of the Royal
Canadian Legion for 32 years,
the aldermanic candidate is also
a member of the Castlegar and
District. Golf Club and is an
ardent hunter and fisherman.

He is employed in the Pur-
chasing Division at Cominco as
storekeeper, Trail Operations.
Rust and his wife, Loretta,
have ‘two children — a son,
Terry, at Williams Lake and a
daughter, Deborah Ann, at
Kamloops.
