Tony Ackney was installed as president, Muriel Wilson vice-president, Sharon Waldie treasurer, Mar garet Obedkoff correspondence secretary, Ann Stasila recording secretary and public relations and Teena Leitch, board representative. Elsie Sharples will head the gift shop committee in the coming year, Teena Leitch the cart committee, Patsy Popoff baby pictures, Inga Lamont knitting, Clara Ger rand tray favors, Marg Davidson candy stripers, Phyllis Lamb membership, Anne Worby extended care, and Shirley Sommers, Anne Worby, Cindy Talarico, Ada Oglow, Grace Honchar the phoning committee. The Auxiliary has just completed its 27th year of service to the hospital. During the past year, the Auxiliary held two rum. mage sales, one raffle and many volunteer services at the hospital raising more than $13,000, all which went towards patient care items. These items included a fetal heart monitor, a razor, hair dryer and many small items for the patients during “special days,” totalling over $11,000. HOSPITAL AUXILIARY . . . Carl Henne expressed his thanks to the Auxiliary and suggested that they are “an integral part of the health care.” He asked for the organization's continued support and co-operation. Hospital administrator Ken Talarico stated that the Auxiliary highlighted the year with its two-third funding for the fetal monitor. Talarieo also reported on future plans for the hospital. He added that the Auxiliary's continued support “can only enhance the health care plan at the hospital.” Nursing director Denise Reid also expressed the value of the fetal monitor and what it has meant to the hospital staff and patients During the Hospital Society's annual meeting held in June, outgoing Auxiliary president Patsy Popoff gave a report to the membership. In her report she outlined the primary purpose of the Auxiliary: “To add to the comfort and welfare of the hospital patients, as well as raising money for hospital needs.” She noted that volunteer hours by members amounted to more than 6,000 hours in the last year. Volunteer services provided by Auxiliary members for patients include hairdressing, entertainment, exer cise, crafts, shaving, birthday and anniversary parties, reading, both Russian and English, and taking baby pic tures. . Members also roll bandages for the sterilization unit, and knitters keep the baby cupboard well stocked. Patients can also purchase special needs items from a cart which is taken around the hospital by Auxiliary members on a regular basis. The Auxiliary also provides a baby layette for needy mothers, tray favors for special occasions and Christmas fruit baskets. A wreath is placed at the cenotaph on Remembrance Day and members decorate the hospital and trees for Christmas. An engraved silver spoon and T-shirt with the inscription “I was born in the Castlegar and District Hospital” is given to the New Year's baby. The Auxiliary also pays for cable TV that patients enjoy during their stay at the hospital. Popoff also told the society the Auxiliary presents three bursaries on an annual basis. Two are given to Selkirk College nursing students and the other is pre sented toa Stanley Humphries student entering the field of medicine. ‘The Auxiliary also sponsgrs candy stripers and holds an awarde day for-them. Th yéar’s awards night was held June 4 at the hospital conference room. At the awards night 12 candy stripers received crests, five received pins, two received caps and one candy striper received her 300-hour pin. A total of 961 hours of volunteer work was given by the girls from June 1983 to May 1984 Popoff noted that two delegates — Tony Acknew and HOSPITAL HELPERS . . . Workshops on stress, the role of auxilaries in the health care field, take time, and the need to get involved with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, were some of the activities delegates attended. The BCAHA conference also stressed the impor tance of men's involvement with hospital volunteer health care. To encourage and initiate more men's support, the local women’s auxiliary will now be known as the Auxiliary to the Castlegar and District Hospital. Leitch travelled with her secretary to all the West Kootenay Hospital auxiliaries and said she found a common bond of “enthusiasm and dedigation to health care.” One special highlight of her two year term was the support given all hospitals by auxiliary members, and seeing a West Kootenay auxiliary honor a male volunteer in the auxiliary for his special services as a volunteer During July and August, the Auxiliary will work “Skeleton shifts” at the hospital, but will be back in the fall.
