PLEASE PAY ON TIME If payday is Friday and the boss says to come back on Wednesday, how do you feel? The same way a carrier feels if he is not paid on time Your Castiegar News carrier is running his own business, and he deserves to be paid promptly If you're late with your payment, your carrier will have to dig into his own pocket to pay for your paper until you do. Keep him in business and he'll keep you in papers. Remember your Castlegar News carrier likes that secure payday feeling as well as you do. Please pay him when he comes to collect. CASTLEGAR NEWS For Your Carrier June 30, 1985 BUSINESS By ADRIAN CHAMBERLAIN Staff Writer Northair Mines Ltd. has completed a 150-metre sec- tion of a 1,050-metre probe for gold near New Denver, but it’s too early to say whether the Vancouver- based mining company has hit the jackpot. “It's the start of the pro- gram but we're encouraged,” exploration manager Fred Hewett said in an interview from Vancouver Thursday. “We just have to gather more information to see if the tonnage and the grade is there.” The site, called the Willa project, is about 12 kilo metres south of New Denver. Northair Mines plans a 3,050- metre underground diamond drilling program following a 3,500 adit (underground tun- nel) to reach the centre of a block of high grade ore. The probe is taking place in the west zone of the 2,915- hectare piece of property. While preliminary work has shown the presence of both copper and silver in the area, Hewett said Northair's main interest is mining for gold. But the company won't decide whether the $1.5 mil- lion drilling program will warrant the construction of a refining mill until the drilling reaches the 765-metre mark this fall, Hewett said. (765-metre) we won't have good (informa- tion), unless we come across something totally unexpec- ted,” he said. Hewett said the refining mill could be built in two years, and would mean ap- proximately 250 jobs in min- ing, milling and rélated jobs. And, he adds, “Our philos- ophy is to try to hire all local.” Currently the drilling pro- gram is providing work for about 15 locals, he said. Depending on the nature of the ore extracted, there is a possibility that Cominco Ltd. in Trail could end up smelting Mineral probe — may turn up gold it. But Hewett added that the presence of copper in sam- ples likely means that Com- inco — which handles mainly zine, lead and silver — wouldn't be chosen. The entire program — in- cluding both drilling and the refining mill — would cost about $2.6 million. Although Northair is the project's operator, it is work- ing with partners B.P.- (British Petroleum) Minerals and Rio Algom Exploration Ltd. The property has been under exploration by B.P. Petroleum and Rio Algom for the past four years, at a cost of $2.6 million, according to Northair Mines 1985 annual report. By spending another $2.6 million over the next thre» years, Northair will earn a 50 per cent interest in the prop- erty. Two areas of mineral-rich ore — the west and main zones — have been identified. On the average, the two million tons delineated in the west zone averaged .08 ounces of gold per ton, .27 ounces of silver per ton, and .66 pere cent copper. RETIREMENT TIME . . . igor Agroff cuts a cake to celebrate his and colleagues Peter Kinakin (centre) and Anton Schwiertz's retirement from Westar Tim- ber's sawmill. Both Agroff and Schwiertz have worked at various jobs during their time with the company, while Kinakin is a millwright with a mechanic's cer- tification.
