A half-dozen or so experienced rafters staked out the back of the bus and had a party, singing along to rock music blaring from the bus’s sound system. The others looked out the window introspectively, catching glimpses of the Chilliwack River through the trees, They were the novices. Clearly, they didn't know what to expect and it would have been. surprising if thoughts of British Columbia's 12 whitewater rafting fatalities this summer hadn't crept into their minds. If they were afraid, they didn’t let on. Each had paid $49 for a y trip down the Chilliwack, about 110 kilometres east of Vancouver. They would journey down the province's longest continuous rapids, with a vertical drop of 83.5 metres every 1.6 kilometres, the sharpest of any whitewater river in B.C. RAFT Inc., the largest operator on the Chilliwack, has identified 50 separate rapids on the narrow, winding river aes given. pets :nemee such an Terminator and Crocodile: Ces) The first-timers milling around RAFT's base camp only hinted at their concern. A young woman who'd come with three friends joked about which of them would come through alive. Her friends didn't think it was funny. Two brothers, ri asked about safety precautions. One mentioned the most recent deaths on the Chilko River. EXCEEDS STANDARDS RAFT's owner, Vladimir Kulich, said later in an interview his operation exceeds current government standards. Even the revised regulations, introduced after the spate of fatalities, included safety measures RAFT has used for the last six years — such as mandatory helmets and heat-conserving wet suits and higher standards for raft guides. Kulich said the Chilliwack is a class four river — class The rafters, dressed in clammy wetsuits and wile and carrying homemake paddies, stepped off the bus and filed down to a river backwater where four rafts are tied up. The safety briefing was terse. Guide Kevin Johnson stressed adjusting the bulky lifejacket for a snug fit so it would not be pulled off in an emergency. The need would become apparent later. Next, a drill on how to retrieve someone who'd fallen overboard and, if they're out of reach, how they could float downriver safely. A quick run through the paddling commands and the group was on the water. Kulich said only the basic safety information was really important for the 50 per cent of his customers who are first-time rafters. FORGET EVERYTHING “Once you hit that first whitewater you forget everything you've been told,” he said. The rafts, none longer than four metres and carrying no more than six people, started downriver. The last raft acted as a sweep boat, watching for what the guides call “swimmers” or any other trouble. Johnson took a three-metre raft with Steve and Michelle, father and daughter visiting from nearby Washington state, Mary, an experienced rafter and river restue technician, and a re " Unlike bigger rafts with a single oarsman or even with outboard motors, paddlers in a small raft control its direction and its attitude when it hits the rapids. Guides such as Johnson sneer at bigger rafts, saying customers are little more than sightseers. “The reason we use paddies is because we want people to participate.” said Kulich. After a few minutes sorting out Johnson's commands, the group began paddling something like a team. Balanced on the raft’s outer tubing, at first they were caught by surprise when the boat hit rapids. But soon they learned to watch the river and anticipate the shocks. The calendar wil display the mostly hairy-chested, mostly muscle-bound firemen in “seductive but tasteful poses,” and it is hoped it will raise $250,000 for the Firefighters Burn Fund, which helps equip burn wards at city hospitals. “It's not really that risque or anything, it’s done in good taste and it should be well received,” said Allan Gaye, the Winnipeg firefighter who, although not in the calender, organized. the project. He copied the plan from Saskatchewan, Alberta and the United States, where similar fund-raising projects have been staged successfully. In Manitoba, however, Bruce Wood, spokesman for the Men's Action Collective Against Sexism, insists the calender is doing to men what men ‘have been doing to women for decades — viewing them only as sex symbols. “As a man, I don't like this trend of objectifying men as well as women, and I can’t imagine the relative merit in in front of fire hydrants in suggestive poses, for people to look at,” Wood said in an interview. “This presents them in a very caricaturized fashion, Rambo of the fire department.” The calendars are to be sold for $10 each with the money raised given to children’ 's burn units at two Winnipeg hospitals and a burn ward at another. The search for the 12 firemen to grace the calendar's pages began earlier this year when 24 applicants were With the Best Prices in Town! SPECTACULAR SCHOOL SALE CONTINUES! The three-woman, two-man judging team, drawn from the ranks of Winnipeg's various media outlets, picked nine men based on how well they photographed and their appeal to the nightclub’s crowd, Gaye said. Eventually, 10 firefighters from the city and two from rural Manitoba made the calendar. “There is one bodybuilder among the 12, but there is a whole range of guys in there, just average guys.” Many of these average guys confess they were a little apprehensive at the thought of disrobing for the calendar, but Mr. September, firefighter Al Dunn, 26, says most of them did it only because it was for such a good cause. “Td never done anything like that before so I was a bit nervous and embarrassed, but we wanted to help the fund,” SAT.
