KEITH HOLUBOFF . residing in Vancouver Photo by Doug Felimon Pulpit & Pew By Rev. GLEN BACKUS St. Peter Lutheran Church A PURSUING GOD Approximately 90 years ago, a Roman Catholic maga- zine in England published a poem by an unknown poet who only two years before had been a drunken, desti tute drug addict. His name was Francis Thompson, and he called his poem “The Hound of Heaven.” As a youth Thompson had been brought up in a religi- ous home. He studied for the priesthood, then for medicine, each time failing because of 4 lack of interest. But Thompson had a love for narcotics which all but des. troyed him. As a young man he lost himself in London where he picked up different odd jobs such as blacking boots, sell ing matches, holding horses anything for enough money to buy a “fix.” For Your Convenience We're OPEN MONDAY WIN Geo TICKETS isted below. He sent some to Wilfred Meynell, an editor and publisher, who was so impressed that he and his wife were determined to find this new genius. And find him they did “more rag. ged and inkempt than the average beggar” according to their description. Thompson came to realize that though he had secluded himself from men and fled to the uttermost bounds of loneliness, he could not es. cape the pursuing love of God. His heart's testimony from his most famous poem reads this way: “T fled him down the nights and down the days, I fled him down the arches of the years, I fled him down the arches of the years, I fled him down the laby rinthian ways Of my own mind, and in the midst of tears I hid from him an under. running laughter From thoge strong feet that followed, followed af. ter.” Thompson could not sin in peace and neither can any of the rest of us. Even as God pursued him, so He pursues us passionately determined to rescue our souls. Some years ago Malcolm Muggeridge, who had been an agnostic for many years before his conversion, wrote an article which began with the words: “Is there a God? Well, is there? I myself, should be very happy to answer in the emphatic nega- tive. I have never wanted a God. I have never needed a God. I have never feared a God, nor have I ever felt under the necessity of invent ing one.” Yet God pursued Mugger- idge, and succeeded in nab- bing him. The pursuit of God took on a very special dimension when He became incarnate and lived among us in the person of Jesus Christ. To- day, He continues to pursue us by Hi#Hély Spirit through His Gospel of free forgive- ness and life in Christ.
