ly MEER tn A we al =, oe_Castlégar News September 30, 1987 New credit card has lowest rate TORONTO (CP) — Can. ada Trust Co. is intro- ducing a credit card with an interest charge of 13.5 Per cent, a rate it says is the lowest of any card in Canada. The new card, called SuperCharge, carries no annual fees, transaction costs or monthly statement fee. “We've designed Super. Charge especially for people who normally pay interest on their credit card,” said Stan Martin, vice-president of card ser- vices at Canada Trust, based in London, Ont. Most bank credit cards charge no interest if the cardholder pays the entire balance by the due date. Normally, interest is charged from the date of purchase on balances out- standing. With the new card, in- terest will be charged from the date the statement is issued. The arrangement is like a cash advance to the customer, on which they pay interest, Martin said. “Our 18.5-per-cent rate puts SuperCharge in the same ball park as personal loan rates. One of the best ways to use it is for those larger purchases you want to pay over a few months.” More than 40 per cent of the 12 million holders of Visa and Mastercard ac- counts regularly pay in terest charges on their accounts.*The balance out standing on credit cards is close to $6 billion, Bank of Canada figures show. The Bank of Montreal announced in mid-August an increase in charges on Mastercard balances to 18.9 per cent, effective in December. Visa banks have also bumped interest charges to 16.5 per cent from 15.9 per cent, effective in early October. ‘Stern disciplinarian’ really means ‘bully’ By BOB TAYLOR Canadian Press Here are the kinds of euphemisms, evasions and fibs that appear on job appli cation forms, along with translations in plain English: EXPERIENCED.
