Members of the Pulp and Paper Workers of Canada and Canadian Paper Workers Union will decide this week whether to endorse a strike mandate. The vote, which will be released on April 22, comes after talks between the British Columbia Pulp and Paper Bu- reau and the two unions broke off talks Monday. : “The bottom line is we'll lose,” PPCW haven’t been given a mandate to negoti- ate a concessionary contract from our members, but that is what we are being asked to do.” Shewaga said management is asking B.C.’s 16,000 pulp and paper workers to end all banking of overtime, restructure pension plans and surrender four statu- tory down days. “(Management) wants to build an American model where they run (mills) 365 days a year, every year.” The two unions, meanwhile, want to strengthen contract ge, pension in- creases and a $2 across-the-board raise of all members.
