MUNICIPAL OWNERSHIP OF GAS. Since the city council arein a tangle regarding the question of lighting the 3 city by electricity and since at least two wealthy companies -see a speculation in putting in gas works in Rossland iv might be well to seriously consider the advisability of the city owning her own gas plant. One hnndred and sixty-two cities in England Scotland and Walea own and op- erate their gas planteand they have uni- formally proven the plan superior to private ownership. Edinburgh, Scotland, cleared, $190,000 on its municipal gas in 1896. Australia, makes profit from her gas plant. The municipal gas works ef Manches- ter, Eng., make a net profit of $300,000 a ~year. Under public ownership Leicester. Eng., has reduced gas to 56 cents, raised wages 15 per eent. and clears $125,000 a year. St. Helens, Eng., furnishes her citi- zens gas at about half the old price and makes $20,000 2 year by municipal own- ership. In 1898 Manchester, Eng., made a profit ot $100,000 om electric: light; ; Biad- ford, $80,000; Edinburgh, $27,000, Eng., L gas piant reduced gas from 76 to 65 cents, and has made a -net saving of nearly four millions of dollars. There is no reason why the City, of Rossland might not own and operate her own gas ‘works. The coke that is made in the manufacture of gas can be sold to the people as fuelat the cost of production, which yrould benefit every- lendid body.
