Russian Descent, at a joint
meeting in Verigin, Sask.
Nov. 16 and 16 finalized plans
for unveiling 2 life-sized sta-
tue of Leo Tolstoy, the re-
nowned Russian writer, phil
osopher and reformer.

The statue, created by
Soviet sculptor Yuri Cher.
nov, will be placed on the
grounds of the heritage vil
lage at Verigin during Heri
tage Day celebrations July 18
and 19.

The statue is a gift to the
ACRD from Society Rodina,
a Soviet organization which

Castlegar schools superin.
tendent Terry Wayling is one
of six Gonzaga University
alumni to be named recipient
of the Distinguished Alumni
Merit Award.

The awards are presented
annually to those graduates
who best exemplify the uni
versity's commitment of “ser.
vice to others.”

Wayling, who completed
his teacher training and
undergraduate education at
Victoria College in Victoria,
and the University of British
Columbia, received a Master
of Arts degree in education
administration from Gonzaga
University in 1978.

For 21 years Wayling
taught and served as prin
cipal in several southern B.C.
communities. He served for
three years as director of in
struction in Nelson and is
starting his fourth year as
superintendent of schools in
Castlegar.

Wayling has served one
term as alderman for city
council in Nelson, has vol
unteered his time and exper
tise to advisory committees
and commissions, and is an
active member of Rotary, the
Kinsmen, and Gyro clubs.

He and his wife, Dorothy,
have been married 24 years
and have three children re
siding in Nelson.
