Neill takes different role

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sam Neill
was born in Northern Ireland and
raised in New Zealand. As an actor,
he was born in Australian films and
raised in American television,

A suitable path to international
stardom.

With his strong features and un
accented English, Neill is a self
proclaimed citizen of the world,
living in London with an apartment
in Sydney and a mountain hideaway
in New Zealand. He was recently

to launch his film with Mery!
Streep, A Cry in the Dark. A
quiet-spoken man, he is nevertheless
forceful in his opinions

A Cry in the Dark is based on a
real-life story that fascinated the
Australian public for years. The wife
of a Seventh Day Adventist church
man declared that her nine-week-old
daughter had been snatched from the
family's camping tent by a wild
dog known as dingo. Because of a
flimsy set of circumstantial evidence,
the woman was charged with mur
dering the baby.

The case stirred emotions that still
remain despite the fact that the wife,
played by Meryl Streep, was finally
cleared of all charges after serving
three years of a life imprisonment
term for murder.

KENTVILLE, N.S. (CP) — This
peaceful Annapolis Valley commun
ity has become the unlikely focus of a
steamy U.S. tabloid tale of romance
between a local dise jockey and
Canadian actor Kiefer Sutherland.

Karin Begin, 21, an announcer with
a radio station that calls itself Magic
97, has been overwhelmed by tele
phone calls, mostly from American
media, said the station's program
director, Shawn Rosvold.

Donald Sutherland and Begin's
father were close friends who grew
up together in Bridgewater, N.S.

Rosvold did confirm the two have
spent a great deal of time talking on
the phone lately, but he said it was
simply a matter of two friends
keeping in touch.

“In the last few months, his per-
sonal life started going downhill and

when Sam was eight and the family
settled in New Zealand. As an out
sider in a colonial environment, he
overcame his shyness by becoming
an actor.

“I saw a lot of American films, and
British films, too,” he recalled.
“Films, cars and rock 'n' roll music
have been the primary American
export of the past 30 years or so.
When I was growing up we had no
television; that came very late to
New Ze: d. So we were raised on a
diet of films that were made within a
four-or five-mile radius of this very
hotel (the Beverly Hills).”

Cartoon exhibit
opens in Nelson

The Kootenay Cartoon and Comic
Exhibition opens Jan. 6 at the Nelson
Museum

Curated by Gary Ramsbottom, the
exhibit will feature the comic artists
of our era in political, fantasy and
comic-book art as well as the usual
off-the-wall graphic statements ex
pected of the genre.

Artists included in the exhibition
