Verigin the Soviet Order. of the Peoples’ Friendship will take place in Castlegar on Jan. 21, the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ has announced. Verigin, honorary chajrman of the USCC, received the award Nov. 10, 1989, from Soviet leader Mikhail Gor- bachev for the USCC leader's ‘‘great contribution in promoting friendship and mutual understanding between the peoples of Canada and the Soviet Union..." The award ceremony will take place at the Brilliant Cultural Centre at 5 p.m. on Jan. 21. The public is invited. A member of the Soviet government and other high-level representatives will participate in the awards ceremony, the USCC says in a news release. As well, high-level Canadian federal and B.C. provincial officials are expected to be among the guests Present. Generally acknowledged .as the leader of Canada’s Doukhobor com- munity since the death of former Doukhobor leader Peter P. Verigin- Chistiakov’in 1939, Verigin was honored last spring for a half-century of continuous service to the Doukhobor people, the USCC says. He has served as chairman of the Association of Canadians of Russian Descent since its inception in 1968. In addition to his responsibilities as head of the Doukhobor community, Verigin has also been involved in many other related activities and his wide range of public service was recognized when he received the Order of Canada in 1976. Please An important announcement | about Unemployment Insurance The Government of Canada recently pre- sented to Parliament a Series of Amendments to the Unemployment Insurance Act (UIA). The purpose of the proposed amendments is to improve existing legislation and to provide additional funds for programs and Job training in areas critical to Canada’s economic future. Major improvements include additional maternity/parental bene- fits and the extension of coverage to people who choose to work beyond age 65. Although passed by the House of Commons on November 6th, 1989, Bill C-21 is still under consideration by the Senate and will not become law on. December 31. Under one section of the current law, workers may qualify for regular UI benefits with at least 10 to 14 weeks of work during the previous year. That section of the law _ expires January 6th, 1990 and until amend- ments to the Act are adopted the following interim rule applies: Anyone making a claim for regular UI benefits that would have started on or after January 7, 1990, must have worked a minimum of 14 weeks during the last year to qualify.
