Former caer resident Gord Edmondon (ri is ahah sturgeon like the one shown here at Inch Cr: it) is now helping study the Fraser River Hatchery near Mission. STREET TALK GORD EDMONDSON, a former Castlegar resident, is involved in a Canadian first on Vancouver Island. Edmondson is part of a project which has been successful in managing the first-ever captive spawning of Fraser River white sturgeon. The project is a cooperative venture between the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Inch Creek Hatchery and an aquaculture research team from Malaspina College near Nanaimo. project arrived at the Inch Creek salmonid hatchery last year. Originally, two weré captive in a private pond in the Fraser Valley and the others were being studied at Malaspina College. When larger facilities were required, Malaspina contacted Inch Creek which has a large outdoor rearing pond, and the fish have flourished there since. The project moved into its final phase last June when the Malaspina team, under the direction of a checks on the Project leader Dr. David Lane has that fry have been successfully produced from an induced ing and conducted at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans salmon enhancement facility at Inch Creek. “‘This is the first time in Canada that hatchery spawning has been attempted with the white sturgeon, and we are very pleased that it has been successful,’’ Lane said in a news release. “*We have been working towards this for five years, and what we have learned adds to the store of knowledge about this very vulnerable and interesting animal."’ Once prolific in the Fraser and other inland and coastal rivers — including the Columbia River — the white sturgeon has always been prized for its great « Size, delicious meat and caviar. However, overfishing and environmental degradation have greatly reduced the sturgeon’s numbers, and populations of any size are limited to the Sacramento, Columbia and Fraser rivers, the release says. It is widely believed that the very large 1,000 Pound-and-over specimens have all been fished out. Other types of sturgeon have been bred in Russia and Europe. In the United States, white sturgeon have been hatchery spawned and are currently being commercially raised for meat and caviar‘6n a few farms in California. The Canadian experiment was unique for the white sturgeon because of the low temperatures at which it was conducted. The five Fraser River white sturgeon in the two females and three males. Samples studied at the University of California at Davis gave first indications of spawning and a watch on the fish continued through the summer. The fry being bred at Inch Creek are from a 24- kilogram, approximately 18-year-old female, and a 58-kg male approximately 35 years old. The team conducting the spawning was led by Lane, and with two assistants, and with Inch Creek assistant hatchery manager Glenn Dixon and his staff. They had additional support from Kevin- Kroll, a sturgeon technician from the University of California at Davis. Approximately 30,000 eggs were produced from the female and fertilized. Cell division began within hours and fertilization was confirmed after 24 hours. Fry emerged after 16 days. ““We have been trying to fill in great holes in the store of knowledge about the sturgeon,”’ Lane said. ‘*Now we know that the species can be produced in hatcheries, enhancement of wild stocks is possible, and that should have considerable value. “‘But we still need to know a lot more about the existing population — how many there are left in the wild, how many reproductive females and males are there, whether they are reproducing and whether they need more protection.”” Some fry will be distributed to other research labs and the remainder will be divided between Inch Creek and Malaspina College. Eventually some may be tagged and returned to the Fraser. Get-Away to t $29.
