It is quite as evident that in most instances the faultfinders are having their trouble for their pains. ; NAVIGATION TO THE YUKON. Sir John Macdonald’s Efforts Toward Opening Clondyke Country. Inthe enjoyment of the Clondyke treasure house the country can hardly estimate how much it owes-to the sagac- ity and foresight of the late Sir John Macdonald and the present Lord High Commissioner for Canada, as the Mar- quis of Lorne, so happily described him for want of a title that has not yet been selected. These men did not give the Clondyke country to Canada, but we owe to them the possibility of getting into it, with only the difficulties that ‘Nature has placed in the way, eays the Manitoba Free Press. This is made to appear from a letter written by Sir John Macdonald:to Sir Chatles Tupper in April, 1871, when he was in Washing- ton assisting to negotiate what has‘since been known as the Washington’ treaty. The following‘ extract will explain how: ‘Then it happened that Donald A. Smith mentioned to. Sir Stafford Northcote'and myself that it’ ‘was ‘of great importance to the Northwest’ to vecure free navigation of the «three rivers mentioned in le says that the is abeolutel indi able. ready Ame! inpemabie ican veseels cisco carry goods via the Yukon into our country at rates-:much cheaper than can be conveyed by anv other ronte. There was Id in the country, hesaid and not with- standing the ignorance of the Yukon at Ottawa, that river was being navigated by American vessels for the conveyance goods into Canadian territory. ing himeelf of the situation, Si: pulated for the free navigation of those rivers, and su it way provided in the treaty. —~— OVER A RAW ONION. “There’es « lot of shootin’ goin’ on over there at Alaska Dick’s saloon.
