HE WILL NOT AGREE TO IT Grand Forks Liberals Will Not Support Him Unless He Abandons Martin—He Will Not Do This, but Announces Himself as a Gov- erament Candidate. : Smith Curtis is a probable Liber- at candidate for the legislature from the Rossland riding, but there is a great big ‘if? in the way. The Rossland Liberals have vainly sought another candidate and are now inclined tor ile th | to the nomination of Mr. Curtis on astraight ticket. But they have been striving to secure the support of the Boundary Liberals for such a course. The Grand Forks Liberals have answered that they do not ob- ject to Smith Curtis, simply asSmith Curtis, but they have no use for Hon Smith Curtis, minister of mines in Joe Martin’s ‘government. If he will cut loose from Martin, resign from the government and enter the field as a Liberal, they will accept him; otherwise they will have none of him. : That is the “if? which stands. in the way. Curtis is so closely tied to his old friend and law’ partner Martin that he could not desert him ‘in the midst of a struggle without™ losing standing. On the other hand, he would have small chance of winning with a third can- didate in the field, while with the united Liberal vote he would nour- ish hopes of becoming a member of a Liberal government and of hold- ing office with it for as many years as the Martin government is likely Liberals are in a predicament, and so is Smith Curtis. Hon. Smith Curtis arrived in town last night and announced his intention of running as a govern- ment candidate for this riding. He will address a public meeting here on Wednesday evening. He refused to say whether he would accept a Liberal nomination, but did say that, asa member of the government, he would stand by the government. As to the offer of the Grand Forks Liberals to sup- port him if he withdrew from the government,he said he was goingto that town in a few days, but would not discuss the matter any further than to make the above statement.
