Women now have own exclusive club By STEVE MERTL CALGARY (CP) — The newest ‘exclusive .club in town isn't lined with dark wood paneling or filled with pungent cigar smoke. Inter Se — Latin for among ourselves — is a quiet retreat a fow steps off the main foyer of the silvery new Gulf Canada Ltd. building in downtown Calgary. The walls are done in soft shades of blue and, green and are huhg with‘modern ‘art. The fur: ire dp the little dining robmi is‘French provincial. And jf you are an unac- alae male the recep- tionist at the front desk will politely ask you to leave. Inter Seis the brainchild of two. women who decided Calgary's female * ‘ business community, barred ‘from membership in the city's traditional exclusive hang- outs, needed a club of its own. Ann Wesley, an accoun- tant, “and Helene Haladaa, who owns an interior design firm, thought up Inter Se two years ago and together with | lawyer Gail Vickery and a handful of investors saw it to its official opening in early’ October. SLOW START . After a alow start, mem- bership has climbed to about 200 women, although the target is 450. The original investors, who paid $2,000 for the privilege of being founders, helped cover start- up expenses but more mem- bers are needed if the club is to survive. Full membership costs $400 annually, plus a $400 initiation fee. That gets you access to the lounge and din-" ing room, the sauna, steam room and whirlpool and exer- cise room and various fitness - programs. Like Calgary’s famous men's preserves, the Ranch- ‘ff man’s Club and the Petro- leum Club, the opposite sex. can come to Inter Se as guests of members. Vickery, club secretary-treasurer, ° says fully half the people in the 95-séat diningroom at Tuneh‘are™ “nds dedociates df the women members, -* "What the men can’t do -after. polishing off their tour- endos forestiers or steak dianne flambe is adjourn for.a little steam with the mem- bers. The’ recreation area is off limits to men, just as women are restricted to cer- tain parts of the Ranchman’s Cl Inter Se isn't the first women's club of its.kind in Canada but it is the ‘first in Alberta. Calgary, whose ex- ecutive community is grow: ing steadily, is a logical location. - ‘Although a couple of the *. members are retired career women, most members work full time. Inter Se’is actively recruiting non- working women. Vickery wouldn't ven- | ture a guess on the incomes ./ of club members but. said Most are professionals or own their own businesses, “so you can draw some con- . clusions from that.” Besides being a female preserve, Inter So offers a couple of things the’ men's clubs don’t. Neither the Pet+ roleum Club nor the Ranch- man's have extensive fitness facilities with a full-time in- structor. They are basically restaurants and~ bars for their members, And ‘while it” might not interest Ranch- man’s Club members, Inter Se members'can attend per- iodic ‘fashion shows at their. club, Inter Se, like its male- only counterparts, brings in luncheon speakers and ofgan- izes functions. In Tact, says Vickery, it's not much differ- fi ent from the older establish- ments across town. “I think that you see almost exactly the same kind of people you'd see at the Petroleum Club, except they're a little better dressed,” she says. ” BASTE WITHSYRUP Baste ham or poultry ji with leftover syrup from canned fruit.
