Bé CASTLEGAR NEWS, December 23, 1981 Christmas shared with Poles BURNABY (CP) — Maria and Kirstejn Christensen feel they've just adopted five new sons in time for Christmas. In the bright, plant-filled living room of the family's spacious home in this Van- couver suburb, five Polish seamen sit quietly adjusting to the enormity of their de- cision to stay in Canada and possibly never see their fam- ilies, friends or homeland again. The Christensens are among a number of families who have offered accommo- dation and assistance to Po- lish sailors who have elected to say in Canada. “I felt I should do some- thing for Poland,” said Po- lish-born Mrs. Christensen, who was so moved by news stories about the latest events in her homeland that she decided to offer the fam- ily’s two empty bedrooms to the seamen. But after she brought two home from the rundown house near the Polish Com- munity Centre where they were staying, she had to re- turn to the house on an errand and saw two more who looked so sad, lonely and lost that she couldn't resist. “The place they were liv- ing in was so terrible they would have gone crazy if they had stayed there,” she said. “I couldn't leave them there.” PHONED DAUGHTER “So I phoned my y daughter Ursula Cempel, 31, also divorced with a five- year-old daughter Casey. “But when I met them and saw the look of desperation in their eyes, I knew I wanted to help. I have so much and they have so little — it’s just ity. It’s Ch and and asked if she would take these two.” But when she went back to the house to pick them up, she got the identities mixed up and told a sailor she'd never seen before to pack up his things. When she realized her mistake and told him he couldn't come after all, she said, there were tears in his eyes and once again she couldn't resist. “When I phoned my other daughter, she was a little concerned because she lives along with just her child. But I told her I knew he'd be OK, I promised there would be no problems, so we broght him too,” The final count was two at the Christensen family home; two with daughter Christine Warner, 25, who is divorced and has a 72-year-old daugh- ter Allyson; and one with you can’t see people hungry and lonely at this time of year.” : JUMPED AT CHANCE Ursula’s sister Christine, charmed by a previous ac- quaintance with a Polish cou- sin, “jumped at the chance” of meeting more people from her mother's homeland. “All they need is a roof over their head and some tender loving care,” she said. She said her boyfriend who happens to be German, is supporting her “all the way.” The Christiansens always have a lot of people around for Christmas, so the seamen will only mean there are 25 for Christmas dinner instead of 20, Maria said. On Friday night, the Chris- tensen’s home was bursting at the seams with relatives, visitors, and pets. “They are not a burden, we are glad to help them,” said Maria, the family inter- preter because she is the only one who is fluent in Polish, + “I told the guys they are part of the family. I already order them around just like my own sons,” children, seamen {> Money for sex-change TORONTO (CP) — King decided the sale i way he could raise enough > money to complete his sex-change operation was to defraud-banks, but his love of fine clothes helped trap him. (AP) — A little boy’s speech problems that improved significantly and his teacher attributes the change to a talking Christ- mas tree used by a depart- mnt store to entertain young- sters. Duane Ross “usually talks with just a single word, usually not a lot of sen- tences,” teacher Kathy Kas- r said. “But the tree talked back to him and he really got ex- cited. He's been talking in whole sentences ever since. He's done it before, but it hasn't been a constant thing.” Duane, 10, is the son of Allen and Pat Ross of neigh- boring Moorhead, Minn. He was one of four mentally handicapped children who visited the tree with Kasper last year at the Dayton department store here. Employees take turns ani- mating the tree with hidden microphones and speakers. “For a long time, we've told Duane that trees, motor- cycles, lawnmowers — those things he takes an interest in Pregnant dolls now on TALLAHASSEE, FLA. Kaspter said Duane’s ex- citement continued through a spontaneous conversation of four to five minutes. “He just responded to the tree. I've worked with him for four months. It was real spontaneous. He just kept on ing.” The December issue of Ms. talking. Magazine recommends the doll as a toy, but the inventor suggests the fabric dolls are not for fun but to educate. On Tuesday, the boy was asked whether he remem- bered the tree. “Just me and Kasper,” he replied, meshing his fingers with hers. ‘Me’ " his teacher said. “He wasn't using that word earlier this fall. The six included four heli- copter pilots and two engin- eers employed by Calgary- based Liftair International Ltd. “They were trying to get to the Antarctic,” said Peter McLeish, chief pilot for Lift- air International. “They were sailing down and for some reason ... ran into a pressure region and the ship sunk.” The men’s names are not being released by company officials until their families have been notified. The six were flying five helicopters for a research team aboard the West Ger- man research ship Gotland II. The ship, a 91-metre-long 4,400-tonne vessel with an ice-strengthened hull, left Wellington, New Zealand, for the Antarctic Nov. 14. It carried a crew of 17, as well as a 25-man scientific team. The ship's situation had not been regarded as serious until three days ago when pressure from the ice in- creased damage to its hull and it began to list.
