SUTHERLAND, P. ENG. Regional Director, Kootenays for: Minister of Transportation and Highways DATED April 23, 1990 at NELSON, British Columbia The commission, now touring the province to assess public opinion on what the forests of British Columbia represent to a wide range of interest groups and individuals, will be in Williams Lake early next month to question association officials. The association, which represents 19 lumber mills, three plywood mills and two pulp mills in an area exten- ding from Boston Bar to Quesnel, says its members are increasingly worried about land-use disputes. ‘Intense debate over the Stein Valley has gone on for 17 years without resolution..A myriad of parks and wilderness areas have been Proposed in every corner of the region,”’ the brief states. “Blockades, injunctions and other actions by native groups in support of their native land claims are in- creasingly interfering with logging operations FOR SALE By Public Tender Tenders will be accepted up to noon Monday 7, 1990 for the following GERHARD HEINTZMAN UPRIGHT GRAND PIANO The above will be sold on an “as-is where-is” basis. Two of the four Moyie lifeboats were removed from the ship about 1970 and were purchased by two boatlovers who scraped them and kept them high and dry, one at John- son’s Landing and one at Birchdale, the Kootenay Lake Historical Society says in a news release. The Birchdale lifeboat returned to the Moyie last fall. Repair, and preservation of lifeboats are part of the current Moyie preservation program which recently received a $10,000 grant from the Vancouver Foundation, the society said. Lifeboat No. 3 from Birchdale will be used as a demonstration model in a boatbuilding workshop to be presen- ted by Canadian Parks Service expert Richard Fairweather in Kaslo on May +, Registration fee is $10. Anyone in- Spiking law > in works VICTORIA (CP) — People who try to stop logging by driving metal spikes into trees could end up behind bars in British Columbia. Fhe Social -Credit-government—is drafting legislation making tree spiking a criminal offence, Forests Minister Claude Richmond said. People opposed to logging have been known to drive metal spikes into trees because—that—makes—logging dangerous, maybe even fatal. A chainsaw can buckle if it hits a spike, injuring a logger.-And if the spiked tree makes it to a sawmill, it could splinter the saw blade, spraying shrapnel at unwary workers. “We intend to impose the maximum penalties allowable under provincial law,"’ Richmond said. Maximum penalty for breach of most provincial statutes is a $2,000 fine_and a six-month prison term or both. “There have been injuries in the States,"’ said Scott Alexander, a spokesman for the forestry giant MacMillan Bloedel Ltd Although spiking has occurred more often in the United States than in Canada, there have been incidents in British Columbia and Alexander said he is pleased the practice will be outlawed The proposed new law follows Richmond’s decision allowing some logging in the 6,700-hectare Car- manah Valley on Vancouver Island. terested is asked to pre-register because attendance is limited to 15 persons, the society said. a Fairweather and another C' Parks Service. expert who has worked on the Moyie program, Alex Barbour, will give a slide show and lecture in Kaslo on May 1, beginning 7 p.m. at the Kaslo Community Hall (the old Scout Hall). Admission is $10. All proceeds from both events will go to the S.S. Moyie preservation fund. Jack L. Parkin Bus. 365-6664 Res. 365-2694 . . . . a . . . .
